Whatever is needed to travel to the US mainland is also needed to travel to the USVI. So the answer is - if you need a visa to travel to Indiana, you need one to travel to STX.

Hi,

I am non-immigrant residing in USA. Till now, my status was H4 (dependent visa) but this year I made the H1B quota which will come in effect on Oct 07. I intend to visit the USVI before that (Aug end). I just want to make sure that visiting USVI is as good as visiting any part of USA mainland. Because at this point when my immigration status is being converted, I cannot risk my H1 by going out of the country.

I am hoping that there is no custom clearing and it is as good as travelling domestic (mainland usa)

Pls advice. Need info urgently.

Thanks

Because we are a port of entry -- one DOES have to clear customs. I don't understand the particulars of your situation. I would check with whoever issued your original "papers". And, if in doubt, I wouldn't travel.

But, you should be able to travel here just like within the continental USA.

Linda's absolutely right, you can come and go to the USVI just as traveling throughout the mainland at this time - but why the question about Customs? U.S. citizens, whether naturalized, bahn-there, H1B quota, or R2D2, have to go through Customs. It is what it is - a point of entry. If you are a local islander and go to the states, you're going through Customs...if you're a statesider and you're going to the islands, you're going through Customs on the return....unless you plan to go to the USVI and never return to the mainland again, you're going to see a smiling Customs Officer face somewhere along the way....

Call whoever handles your immigration status - I'm not sure a forum is the correct place to get info. Then again, most of the time the government isn't such a great source either.....

I agree with Linda J and Becky - call the authority that handles your immigration status. Call several times if necessary - get names. I advise international students on academic issues on a daily basis but, since I'm not in the loop to receive immigration updates, I ALWAYS refer them to the office that DOES get the most current information on that issue.

I am a student from Kenya. My F-1 student visa has expired, however, I am still a full-time student. My I-20 is updated and valid. Would my visa status affect re-entry in the US mainland; considering that I am traveling to the USVI. Do I need a current F-1 student visa to travel to the USVI?

Please re-read the answers above. All apply to you. You should call whoever issued your visa.

Nickson,
Getting to the USVI from the mainland (USA) is not a problem. When you leave the USVI (Territory of the US) you must clear US Customs. Your Expired Student Visa means just that "EXPIRED". They will not let you enter the US Mainland and will probably detain you at your expense for Deportation proceedings.Get your Student Visa renewed!

My sister-in-law is a resident alien and we were just researching this because she and my brother are thinking about a trip to STJ.

Non U.S. citizens who are re-entering the mainland from the USVI need to have whatever paperwork they would use to enter the United States at any other point-of-entry. So, if you have to have a visa to enter the U.S., you'll need your visa to re-enter at STT or STX. If you have residency in the U.S., you have to show your greencard. Your visa cannot be expired.

Any local branch of INS can help you with this.

Your visa is for entry to the US so the answer is yes.
