Is it safe to drink the water in St. Thomas or do you need bottled water? How bad are the bugs? Do I need to bring bug spray? Thanks.

We drink bottled water while we are there, in fact we do that at home also. Have found some lovely Castle Springs water in the Virgin Islands (it is imported from our own state). As for the bugs, they have only been a problem one year for us and really not all that bad (according to Deb as they were only going after me). We do bring bug spray just in case we need it.

Hello,

Depends on the water source. City water and water from taps in resorts and hotels - I would not drink, but I would not drink tap water in hotels anywhere. Many hotels that I have stayed in often say the water is not potable.

Most homes in the USVI have cisterns. If the owner of the home keeps the cistern clean then that water is drinkable. Some folks who have not cleaned their cisterns in a while might use a filter on the tap, and drink it. Ofter after storms people will boil their water before drinking for a time.

Bugs are not a big deal. On beaches and after rain there might be no seeums and mosquitoes out. Bring a small bottle of refellent just in case, or buy it on island if you find you need it.

Rick and Deb,

Isn't it great that we travel all the way to the Caribbean and get to drink bottled water from NH? I think it's a kick!
