I have had some people lately tell me that the water will be cold when we visit St. Thomas in March and that we won't want to be in it long. Well most of my plan for the week is to lay on the beach and do water activities. Are they right about this? Or should I consider rescheduling for a little later in the year????

I never find the water cold I'll snorkle for hours in feb. and march but then I'm coming from WI so it just might feel warm to me.

I live here year round and don't much care for the water temperature in the summer because it's too warm - I end up going way out and seeking deeper cooler pockets. Feb/March is just PERFECT. I've never heard anyone say the water is too cold and to me that's pretty funny. Cheers!

I live in FL most the year 'round and I don't put my big toe in the Gulf of MX until Memorial Day. That said, I've been on Water Island during the fall, winter and spring. I have adopted a "Scream-o-Meter". On a scale of 1 to 10, (10 being the most screams), my tropical weather trained body rates January in the Caribbean as an 8 Scream. March....4 Scream. May & June it's a wonderful "Ah! Refreshing! 1 scream). I think there is a section on this web site/VINOW that offers the water temps at the different months of the year.

Visitors to the islands never complain about the water temps...it's only us spoiled locals that worry about it....

Glad to hear that....I'll be coming from Indiana where we always seems to get at least one big snowstorm in March.....so I wll be so ready to relax on the beach and be in the water until I look like a raisin!! 😉

Thanks for your responses!

The water temperature this past March was 78F. I prefer the 82F water we get in November. You can tell that the water is cooler, but we don't spend less time in the water because of that.

Cheers, RickG

The VI residents do get a little testy over the 'cold' water in the winter but it is enjoyable once you get used to it. Sometimes I will wear a light rashguard or t-shirt if I am going for a long snorkel -- 45 min+.
The temperature in March is not likely to deter you at any time from any water activities.

I have been to STT a few months out of the year and the water in March can be a bit chilly at times.

Like I said " a little testy" - unless you are so used to the summer water temps here March is just fine.

of course you could go in the Ocean by Boston.

Temperature is relative.

It is about 78-80 in March with a little wind. In August = September it is about 86.

If that is too cold then don't come down!!!
