I went to a STJ Mexican restaurant a couple of years ago and had a horrible time. Someone asked me about Mexican and I wanted to warn them about this place. I know there are a couple of Mex spots in STJ.

You enter the restaurant door from the large, public parking lot that is in Cruz Bay - the one that has the entry on that road near the Texaco.....between the Texaco and the ferry dock. When you enter, you come into the bar and indoor dining area, but can be seated out on a large balcony....sort of overlooking Cruz Bay.

Does this give enough description to name this place? It is a fairly large place, so I was surprised about the horrible service and food. I wrote a review on it in one of my old trip reports, but didn't note the name.

Yup, sounds like Polli's. But I'm surprised that you had a bad experience there, Bluwater. It's one our favorite places. Must have been a bad day at Polli's when you were there. They have great Margaritas and really good pulled pork and fish tacos. I don't think you can really expect good 'Mexican' food in St. John. Maybe in California or in Mexico but not so much in STJ.

This is disheartening. We had a horrible experience at Margarita Phil's and were looking to try Polli's next trip. Maybe I should stick to making my own enchilladas when I start to crave cheese and sauce!

You can't be too picky about Mexican food when you're in STJ. If you are, you'd better make your own. My daughter lives in California and the only Mexican dish she'll eat on STJ is a fish taco at Polli's. She claims there are few places that make true Mexican food outside of California (but remember, she's from California). ha ha

I went to margarita phils about two weeks ago and it was EXCELLENT. I think it's the best mexican food in the USVI.

Server was a good guy too. No problems on this end!

Don't get too excited about going to Polli's...it is closing very soon, if it hasn't closed already.

We liked the margs at Margarita Phil's and the food was ok, but the waitress we had last time was borderline mean! ha ha! We all sat quietly and tried not to ask for anything because she was super rude. We were afraid of what may happen if we upset her! We were planning to try Polli's this week too, but I trust Bluwater's opinion. I think we'll just skip the mexican all together and opt for places like Rhumb Lines, Morgan's Mango and that yummy BBQ place across from the post office. I want to try Sweet Plantains too. The low tonight in Iowa is -10 (yes that's minus ten)! We leave tomorrow!

Thanks everyone.

Actually, I recall the food being just slightly less than ok - maybe horrible was too strong of a ord to use for the food (can't recall too many details of the food - but I remember something about the tacos not being what we think of when we have tacos) - but I've only gone once, so maybe they DID have an off night. Every place is worth trying twice if the reviews are fairly good and your one experience wasn't.

The real problem was our waitress. She was absolutely horrible - probably the worst waitress I've ever had. She was really nasty to us (the kind that makes you afraid to ask for ANYTHING) and never came back to ask if we needed more drinks or anything. Diana wrote about them having good margartas - which is great if someone actually BRINGS you a margarita. I remember having to get up from the table (outside) and go to the bar myself (inside) to get drinks for my table (on more than one occasion)....where I found our waitress sitting at the bar enjoying a meal. Even after I stood next to her and ordered drinks, she didn't get up or say anything to me.

I wouldn't have expected great Mexican food, just like I wouldn't have expected great excellent service in the islands....but I would have expected them not to act like it was a fast food restaurant where you go to the counter for everything you want.

I should have complained to the manager or owner right after that, so they could have identified her and corrected the problem. I didn't. Maybe she's not there now and things are running smoothly. I just think of how much more $$$ these places might make if the drinks are promptly refilled. Don't the waitresses realize that the tip is a % of the bill - so, the higher the bill, the larger the tip!

if you're from California you'll find Margarita Phil's passable at best. But excellant it is far from. And the margaritas, well, nope. We don't consider red chips as very Mexican.

I think the fact you can eat and drink on a patio on STJ fools the taste buds.
