We'll be renting a villa on St John in December and were planning to cook some of the days so I was wondering if we could buy fresh fish and seafood from the local fishermen? We'll be staying in Cruz Bay but will also have a car if we need to drive out.
Any advice is much appreciated! -Julie 🙂

I am planning to buy my seafood at The Fish Trap restaurant and store, which is right in downtown Cruz Bay.

I hear there are roadside vendors, but I have never had much like finding them when I am there.

Hi Lulu! Thanks for the tip! I also just learned that there are road side trucks with fish but it varies when they arrive (if at all) - it all depends on how the catch of the day 🙂 When are you going to be in St John?

November 8-15.

I have never had the luck to find the trucks, but I know exactly where the Fish Trap is.

This will be our second trip, and I researched like crazy last time. I am scrambling to make arrangements right now because we had to change houses and decided on a different car and some other stuff, but I am pretty much going with the flow. Have you been to STJ before?

We're staying at Tesseract, on Rock Ridge Road. We had to change villas way too late for my taste, but it comes highly recommended, so I am looking forward to it.

We actually got married in STT in 2005, so we took a day trip to STJ then but were too busy for anything else. So now we are coming back to STJ. It's breathtaking and I cannot wait!!!

Tesseract looks beautiful! As far as car, I was debating whether to rent at the airport and transport the boat by barge or just rent on st john. Finally decided to rent a car on st john ( http://www.courtesycarrental.com/) because they provide free parking in town and at the beaches. Who are you renting from?

We are either renting from Paris or Cool Breeze, because they have the kind of cars we want available for our week.

Some of the girls in our group rented from Courtesy last time, and they were great to work with. The in-town parking is nice.

We pick up fish from the local vendors to the left of Natures Nook in Cruz Bay. In Coral Bay there is a local vendor across from Crabby's on the water. Look for ice chests set up and stop and have a look. We go for the non-reef fish - tuna, waho, kingfish

Cheers, RickG

It's a little harder to catch them in Cruz Bay as it used to be. Unfortunately, one of our local fisherman was lost at sea back in April. You can read a little more about that on St. John Source, http://www.onepaper.com/stjohnvi/?v=d&i=&s=News:Local&p=1206159558 I haven't heard anything more about him since they called off the Coast Guard search 21 days after he was reported missing.

The guys still sell across from Nature's Nook in Cruz Bay and occasionally some guys show up from St. Croix with Lobsters but mostly we buy Mahi and Wahoo and stay away from the reef fish. They have big white coolers and usually a scale is hanging from the fence. You wouldn't really know they are selling fish but don't be scared off by the machete's, they use them to cut your steaks.

Also, if you want some fresh fish to grill, consider chartering a fishing boat. Most boats will let you keep as much as you want to grill for the night (10-15 pounds) providing you catch some fish. You are very likely to catch fish, the local charter fishing boats are extremely good. On St. John call World Class Anglers (340-344-1155) or Mixed Bag (340-513-0389). Double Header will also come over from St. Thomas for you but stick to the local island boats first.

Good Afternoon. All of these posts are fairly old. Can anyone on STJ address the question again as we tried to find some fresh fish last year and had no luck.
Thanks for any information that you may be able to provide!

There are still people who sell their catch by Nature's Nook. Look for them in the afternoon (3ish). And look for the guys with the big white coolers.
