Is there a substantial savings if we buy our groceries in St. Thomas on way to Red Hook or should we wait to get on St. John? If so, which St. John grocery store has the best prices?
Thanks for the help!

For me, the hassle factor of bringing groceries over on the ferry doesn't make the modest $ savings worthwhile. We have found the prices at the Dolphin Market and the newish grocery nearby the Westin entrance to be relatively (key word LOL) good for STJ. Starfish is the most complete US mainland style market. Enjoy your trip

We are staying near Cruz Bay and will be bringing a jeep over to St. John via barge.

Buy them on STJ, the folks there really appreciate your business, plus the ice cream will melt by the time you get over on the car ferry...

I would recommend a stop at Food Center on Hwy 30 before Red Hook. Their overall prices are a bit lower than on STJ. Buy 1 or 2 or 3 of their rotisserie chicken for $5.99 each.
It's a real life saver for me. One chicken, some pasta or rice and salad will take care of our family of 6. And their chicken is really good.
The chicken at Starfish Mkt on STJ costs $12.99 and is not a good.

I always recommend a stop at Cost-u-less in STT if you are taking a STT vehicle on the barge - you will save a considerable amount over the STJ prices - certainly on drinks, and snacks - but if you are planning to do cooking or have a group with you in STJ it will be well worth the shopping time.

And the shops and stores on STJ really appreciate you shopping on STT, just ask any of the owners. I have purchased many of chicken at Starfish, they are not $12.99, are the prices higher yes, these folks deserve a living also.

I might suggest you think of having all of your food shipped down ahead of you, that way you really save and both islands are avoid when it comes to spending your money.

Enjoy your vacation, the locals apparently will not.

A little overreaction, RM? Even the folks on STJ sometimes go over to STT to shop.

A LOT off St Johnians come over to St Thomas to shop so let's not get carried away. CostULess is an excellent stop, their prices and selection are better than Food Center and their rotisserie chicken is excellent too! Cheers!

Was never met to appear as overreaction, it is much the same as those that rent a vehicle on STT and drive to STJ, ask any of the STJ rental shops what they think of that practice.

It would be different if some came to STJ and rented a vehicle to drive on STT, same thing with the food issue, how many STT folks come to STJ to buy their food. If you are staying on STJ do them a favor and buy your food there, I do not see that as to much to ask.

No matter where you shop, know that the Rotisserie Chicken at Starfish is indeed, 12.99. I just had a discussion last week with an STJ resident that said it was the best 13.00 she has ever spent.

Shop where you like and what you have time for, the locals of the US Virgin Islands will thank you.
