My family (all women ages 19, 22, 24 & 48) and I will be in St. Thomas on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 and will be on a cruise. I'm so confused as to what shore excursion, what beach to visit, should I book on my own, maybe go through someone like AIR FORCE 1 FUN, or GODFREY, or use a taxi to get around, etc. Do any locals have any suggestions on the beaches? We're going to be there from 10 am - 8pm and we'd really like to visit a couple different beaches and shop at our own leisure. I've also read that car rentals are a great way to get around but would that be feasible for only 1 day? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here it is:

Brenda,
I would suggest you start a new thread for your questions as you may get more response. This is a different subject!

I would suggest making your own plans for sure, the ship gets a cut of any excursions they plan, so it will be cheeper if you do it.
On the car thing, people have rented as well as hired a driver, not sure which would be cheeper in this case for one day. Contact airforce 1 and find out what he would charge for a day of taking you were YOU want to go and then find out how much a car is for the day! That will help.
Suggestions:
shopping in town where there is history to be seen at the same time!
Beaches: Magens, Smith Bay, Secret Harbor, Sapphire, and Coki. Ship people will mostly go to Magens and Coki. If you want to be different Sapphire and Secret Harbor would be my choices!
Hope this helps!
ps- We drive on the LEFT!

Here are my choices.

Secret Harbor
Magen's Bay
Sapphire
Linquest

Get a cab and have him take you two of the beaches

If I had only one beach to visit I would visit Megan's Bay. The reason being is that it is the largest and in my opinion the most beautiful. It is also world renowned and it in most top 10 lists of beautiful beaches. The next question is how to get there. I would suggest cruise ship shore excursion since you have not been to the island before. It make it easier and much less stressful. If you had been on the island before and had a barring on where things were I would suggest a car. We have taken several cruises and we almost always rent a car on the island we have been to before. If we have never been before we usually do an excursion through the crews line.

I would skip the shopping (and I am an avid shopper!). I would go to Megan's first thing share a pizza there for lunch. Grab an alcoholic milkshake from Udder Delight (on your way leaving Megan's Bay) then head for Coki Beach. The beauty and calmness of the water at Megan's is indescribable, a must encounter, and the fun that is to be had at Coki will keep you smiling for the rest of your trip! Plus, the blueness of the water at Coki is fantastic! We almost missed out on Coki because we didn't think it was for us because it tends to get crowded, but we had SOO MUCH FUN! The atmosphere is really cool! Have fun and remember, if things don't go as planned you have just created a new adventure!

😎
