Hello - Are there any yarn shops in St. Thomas and/or St. John? Thanks!

No, there aren't any yarn shops. There's very little demand for knitted goods, because it seldom gets cold here.

There are some nice fabric stores in town, so you may want to consider knitting with tropical fabrics. Knitting with wire and beads is done by some jewelry artists. Fabric in Motion is located on "Greenhouse Street" and Roses' Crafts and Things is on the side street next to Pizza Hut.

On the relocation board they also have a topic for quilters.

Actually, Roses, The Fabric Store and the little shop in Smith Bay (Lone Eagle) all have a small selection of yarns. Also Cash and Carry (oddly enough) carry a selection of nice, soft acyrlics in some great colors. I used a lot of that for crocheted hats and scarves for Christmas presents this year. Worked up nicely.

But we don't have any speciality yarn shops.

Yes, they do have yarn, but it's that acrylic yarn you can pretty much get everywhere in the States. I wouldn't go out of my way on vacation for them unless I lived somewhere that didn't have any yarn, and I couldn't order any online.

I just found a neat knitted purse pattern made from fabric on the Internet. I may try that one, though I've never knitted with fabric. In fact, I barely knit at all, but I love knits!

Hi - Where can I find the pattern that you mention? Maybe I will try it as well.

Oh, on vacation? Well, not much of notice here then. You can try the sea grass (strip it, dry it and use your favorite method of joining into yarn) or palm fronds. I have used both and they were - er - interesting. But if I am bored and have nothing to work with I will crochet with anything that doesn't move!

Here's where I found the pattern:

I'm a beginning knitter, but I think I can do this. I bought out all the bamboo handles at Rose's last year when I was going to try cigar box purses, so I need to do something with those handles! It would be cute, I think, if you knitted it with raffia. Lots of possibilities.

Pam, I may need your help, though!

Happy to help ... just an aging hippie here and as stated will crochet anything that stands still long enough! PM me and we will talk.
