Two of us traveling in late April or early May and want beachfront condo or villa for up to a week. After researching it seems like the East end of island may be best location, but looking for any comments, please. Trying to keep the cost down to $1000. or less. We love to snorkel from the beach, if possible.

Secret Harbor, Sapphire Beach, Cowpet Bay, Point Pleasant -- all on the E End -- hotel//condo rooms.

You might want to take a look at www.vrbo.com for privately-owned condo rentals at all the above except for Secret Harbour which is booked directly through their own management. The best snorkeling right off the beach is at Sapphire or Secret Harbour. Happy hunting!

Have stayed at Sapphire Beach twice (Building E, right next to the marina and looking out at St. John) is the best one. Don't expect anything fancy, but do check out VRBO.com. Might be hard to get it under $1000 though. You could also check out Sapphire village, not on the beach exactly, but still within walking distance to the beach. Have a great time!

Hello,
We're staying here- "Million Dollar View" - it's on the northside, 1 br private condo - In high season it's only $135/night.

sorry, I didn't see the part about "beach front" - it definitely has great views but not beachfront.

Beachfront is nice but egads - you have your choice of MANY beaches. Much nicer when you have the trades and a fabulous view.

Tuner: I just realized you are talking about Carnival time- late April. Things will be very busy and expensive. You might want to wait until mid-May to see if you can get something in your budget, but I think $1000 is still a little low for beachfront. Or do you mean $1000 each?

Just curious, but why not a fan of condo accommodation?

Condos are Ok, I just prefer stand alone accomodations or lower density accomodations. Less people per square feet means more privacy. Condoa are great if you like to be in a community setting.
It's all good...

Ahhh Carnival is the end of April, isn't it? Just read about it and very new to STT. Any more info on this? Is is crazy crowded at this time? The excitement might be fun but not a big fan of hordes of people. Please advise...

Carnival is a time when a lot of Virgin Islanders who have moved to the states return for reunions and parties. It is wicked crowded downtown, especially when they close the only parking lot to make Carnival Village. Think State Fair food, rides, music. You won't feel it outside of that. On the other hand, accomodations fill up and I have heard it is difficult to rent a car. It is fun to go to the food fair, parades, firworks, etc. as long as you don't try to drive downtown!

Re: Sherban's observations on condos...On St. Thomas, you almost have to stay in a condo if you want beachfront. That is the way that the island has been developed. There are always these two factions- hotel vs. villa- on the boards. It all depends what is important to you. When I travel, I don't want to cook and make the bed, so I am def a hotel person.:-) But it is nice that people have a choice, isn't it?
