We are staying in St. Thomas (with 2 nights in St John) mid March 2011. What are the best beaches to snorkel and hang out that don't get overrun with cruise ship passengers? Are there any?

Thanks!

IMO.....Smith Bay Park......but not much snorkeling......

Smith Bay Park has a $2 entrance fee.......it's between the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Sapphire Beach.

There are no facilities.

Best bet is to check the cruise ship schedules when you get here as not every day sees ships in port. The best snorkeling beaches on STT are Sapphire, Secret Harbour and Coki and on days when there are no cruise ships in, they're very quiet. Even with cruise ships in, the busy part of the day is 11-4PM. Enjoy your visit!

Thanks for the responses guys.

Can any of you comment on the beaches at Marriott Frenchmen's Reef or at the Ritz Carlton? We will be staying at both.

Thanks again!

No snorkeling at the Reef's beach, water can be a little choppy but otherwise nice enough beach with all facilities. The Ritz beach is OK - small and lined up with beach chairs, no snorkeling to speak of but nice enough.

Lindquist Beach on St. Thomas is nice for snorkeling - and not many cruisers, also no facilities (at least not last Feb when I was there). Best snorkeling I've done in USVI was Leinster Bay on STJ - it is fantastic - you drive to Annenberg Sugar Plantation -- then hike back about 2/3 mile along a rocky path - there's no beach to speak of - but once you get in the water, the snorkeling is out of this world. Enjoy! I'll be there in February and can't wait!

Hull Bay is a nice beach with a great beach bar, good snorkeling, and no cruisers. Mostly locals.
