Its been a long time since we have been to the USVI (2004). Wondering what's the same and what has changed. We always stayed on St. Thomas in the past but we are staying on St. John this time. We did spend a lot of time on St. John during our past trips so we are pretty familiar getting around. I have a few questions but will probably have many more before we head down in December.

Where is the best place to rent a Jeep for 4 days? Is Discover card widely accepted in St. John? What restaurant/bar is currently located at the former site of "Duffy's Love Shack"? Seems like many of the other bars/restaurants are still there..... wondering what's new?

Really looking forward to some "Island Time".

Based on my research on-line, here is what I was able to find out. Many of our favorite bars and restaurants in St. John are still there. They include Morgan's Mango, The Lime Inn, Cafe Skinny Legs, and Woody's. I saw an article that the Lime Inn is for sale but still open for business. I was bummed to hear that Larry's Landing closed recently. We liked Larry's because they always carried my wife's favorite beer Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Still not sure what's going on with Duffy's. From what I can gather, the St. Thomas Duffy's is still open but the one on St. John appears to have changed hands a couple of times over the last several years? Not sure what is there right now.

Got some good tips on jeep rentals from another post. Thanks to all for the info. During our past visits to St. Thomas we only did a 1 day jeep rental on St. John. The one year it rained pretty much most of the day when we rented our jeep. At least the 4x4 came in handy that day. We are really looking forward to exploring more of the Island this time around.

As for my Discover card question, in years past we always used Travelers Checks. But they are sort of a PITA. So this time around I was hoping we could use our Discover card where possible to take advantage of their cash back promotion. But it seems like Visa and Mastercard are more popular on St. John.

I'd check out St Thomas first as you can get the jeep from the airport and go to the car ferry on STJ--Dependable, Discount, First, and Avis are good companies--Budget has been a disaster lately
Is Discover card widely accepted in St. John?
Nope--nor is AMEX. Bring Visa or Mastercard

I *think* this is Castaways, basically across from Woody's in the side alley. My friend Dan is the owner there--fun place

Thank you ventogt for the info and great tips! I just realized I had a typo in my previous post. I wouldn't want anyone to think there was a Cafe Skinny Legs. *-)
That was supposed to be Cafe Roma and Skinny Legs.

Skinny Legs is still here and is great--I have heard of Cafe Roma but haven't been there so can't speak to that. I'm traveling to STJ tomorrow with some visitors so I'll take a look then!

Yep, Castaways is now where Duffys used to be. Cafe Roma is still there and re-opened this week. As noted above, stalwarts like Morgan's Mango, Lime Inn, Woodys, Skinnys, Zozo, Joes BBQ, etc are still there. There is a tex mex place where Stone Terrace used to be, it pretty good. We love hanging at the Beach Bar too. There is a new-ish food market down by the Westin, the prices are a little better than Starfish or Dolphin. We usually rent through Conrad Sutton for our weeks but were able to do a shorter jeep rental for 3 days from Paris Jeep Rental last year, really good service. Have a great trip!

Thanks for the update on Castaways! I always liked the layout of this establishment with the upper and lower levels. I enjoyed the crazy drinks when it was Duffy's Love Shack. I'm looking forward to checking it out. I read somewhere they have $1 drink specials at Happy Hour..... REALLY? Sounds good to me.

We always enjoyed the pizza at Cafe Roma. Come to think of it, we never had Pizza anywhere else on St. John. Cafe Roma is a special place for us because it was our first restaurant experience in St. John on our honeymoon. This was back in 94' when the island was a little more "sleepy". I don't think they even opened until 4pm back then.

I think the tex mex place you are referring to is called "Cactus on the Blue" now. I recognize the building with its charming stone work but we never ate there when it was the Stone Terrace. We love Mexican food so we may just have to add this to our list.

The Beach Bar is going to be a new experience for us this year. We may have had a drink there in years past but I really don't remember. I think their T-shirts are a hoot and I might just have to get one. I also like the Beach Bar Theme song on their web site. Too funny!

Thanks for the tip on the new market near the Westin. We never stayed on St. John before so we never bought groceries there. Our MO is to stay at a place with a fully equipped kitchen. Most of the time we make our own breakfast and lunch but and then eat out for dinner. Do you know the name of the new market?

Good stuff! Thanks for the tips misterduffy.

I think the market is called "St John Market"...imagine that. I always shop there even for day trips to STT because it's quick and easy. Just head towards Westin/Chocolate Hole [4th exit on traffic circle if coming from car ferry] and you'll see it on your left.

Interesting. Can you walk to St John Market from say, Gallows? We do walk to Marketplace, so if it's about the same distance...?
