Looking for the best option from STT airport to STJ?

1. Take cab to redhook then ferry over? How much does a cab normally cost?

2. Take ferry from Charlotte Amalie to STJ? do I have to take a cab to Charlotte Amalie? If so what is the cost?

Side question....what would be the best dock to come into on the way back to get to the courthouse to pick up marriage documents?

Thanks!

I leave this Saturday!

The cost are about the same pay more for taxiand less for ferry at red hook or less for taxi and more for ferry at CA If you are going to get you Marriage lic. the down town ferry is the way to go you can walk from the ferry dock to the gov. building.

Waterguy is right--either way the cost is about the same. If you go out of Red Hook, the taxi ride is longer and more expensive ($15 a person plus tip) but the ferry ride is shorter and less expensive ($5 per person plus $2 a bag). Charlotte Amalie is closer and thus a shorter and less expensive taxi, however the ferry is $10 a person plus bag fees.

But I think overall, I'd rather be on a longer ferry, enjoying the breeze and the view, than on a longer taxi, stuffed into a van on all the winding roads. Go from Charlotte Amalie!

Just make sure you check the schedule. As of yesterday (Sunday the 24th) there were only three ferries going either direction a day between Charlotte Amalie and Cruz Bay: one morning each way, one noon each way and one afternoon each way (around 3-4:00).

We were just there last week and on our way back they said that the ferry from STJ to CA was not running so the only option was to Red Hook.

Cost is $5 per person with $2 per bag to/from Red hook. You pay for the bags at the ticket office and not to the guy that throws your bag on a cart and asks for a tip. He doesn't do a good job of explaining this process so he can get a $2 per bag tip. You must get a red tag from the ticket office to put on your bag. Cost of the cab ride from airport to Red Hook is $15.

Still up for interpretation. It is running., I have seen them. Just the schedule is out of kilter.

Sorry it was not explained to you that if you use the porter service (like at the airport) instead of taking them yourself that a tip is expected. The $2.00 per bag is the fee charged by the ferry company (or really who knows who and for what 🙂 ) and not the porters, so a tip is expected just like it would be if you used a porter at the airport.
