Hubby and I are considering these two accommodations and would like to hear from anyone who has stayed at either and/or ther east end.

The Buccaneer is a full service resort on the East end with golf, tennis, beach, restaurants. etc. It is quite expensive per night. Out of my price range

Gentle winds is a condominium complex. It is on the North Shore at Salt River. It is set back from a very nice beach. You will find it residential and quiet. It is not really near any commercial areas (restaurants, shops, etc). A car is necessary for either location.

There are many other very nice places to stay on St Croix. Keep asking questions.

As far as needing a car, you definitely need one @ Gentle Winds. However, at the Buccaneer, they do offer a shuttle service (I think its $5 each way) into Christiansted. So....if all you want to do is stay at a nice resort most of the time, and then go into town a few times for shopping and dining, the Buccaneer will work just fine. But if you want to explore the rest of the island, you will need a car.

Hello Suesun

I've had the opportunity to check out several rooms at the Buccaneer Resort and if I were to stay there it would only be in one of the doubloon rooms - they are really beautiful but they also come with a $500 a nite price tag. I have rented 3 bedroom private villas in Shoys Estate for $300 a nite (off season) & rented condo's for $150 a nite all in the immediate or close proximity of the buccaneer.

The east end of the island is our favorite - great beaches - good restaurants - If your into gambling the Divi Casino is a 10 to 15 minute drive from the Buccaneer - for shopping and even more restaurants downtown Christiansted is about a 10 minute drive - and to get to Fredricksted on the opposite end of the island is only a 25 minute drive - more great beaches and shopping and restaurants over there also

If the price per nite at the Buccaneer doesn't bother you I would say do it - If it does worry you and you feel that you would rather spend the money on other things - like stxer stated - there are many other places to stay

This is the opinion of a poor tourist

Have fun making your plans

Have fun on STX - we always do

Steve

It has been a few years but I spent 2 weeks in a condo at Gentle Winds. It is more our type of vacation than a busy resort or hotel. The beach is excellent and we like the option of fixing at least some of our own meals rather than eating out all the time. It was a gated community as I recall, so it felt very secure, which is not always the case on STX.

As has been pointed out, it's more remote than The Buc and that's just how we like it. But if you're into night life, it's less convenient.
