Hi all.....anyone ever rent vans or cars and take the car ferry to Cruz Bay , St John, from St Thomas,,? We've always just winged it from red hook, then got a bus.....one of our group wants to rent in St. T. and car ferry; from what i've read on a few boards the car ferries fill up fast, loaded with commercial trucks, etc. Sound to iffy to me; any experience?????
Leaving in Dec. on Holland America....help!!

Hi Sherry.

Car ferries do carry commercial vehicles and frequently give them priority over non-commercial vehicles. Also, there can be lines for the car ferry and you may have to wait awhile in both directions. If you're only here for a day during a cruise, renting a car on STT and taking it back and forth on the car ferry to STJ will chew up most of your time here.

..dntw8up.....thanks so much for the advice, I'm sure it's a time waster, maybe even end up missing the cruise ship....I was also thinking of all the time of going to GET the rental vans, come back to ship, load up, return the vans at the end of the day, on and on. Argh!!
Thank you!!

I have had perfect luck with taking rental cars to STJ from STT for my stays on STJ....but I would not do it for a day. Renting, ferry boarding, then ferry boarding on the STJ side, and then RETURN to STT car rental counter (even if not in the airport) can take longer than a statesider is used to things taking...and we have a way of forgetting how slooooowly things work in the VI, until we get there and begin to experience it.

So, you're right. Tell your friend that we all said you're right!! 🙂

You can always take the people ferry to St. John and then a taxi. St. John is BEAUTIFUL!!

Don't miss it
