I currently am living in hawaii and attending massage school. was sort of contemplating moving to the carribean when I graduate next year; was wondering which island is the best to start out on and how much liberal freedom there is in the island culture in the virgin islands. I am blessed to be able to have the life I have right now, but as a traveler, I cannot help but share the aloha in a variety of places.

I am gay, but my attitude and personality do not reflect the sterotype. I also like bodysurfing, and learning about different religions and spirituality. I am not looking to travel to a place that is one faith based, but more so an open minded and spiritual perspective as Maui has brought me. I am also nineteen, almost twenty, so won't be able to go out much at night - but that is not one thing I am looking for.

any help necessary would be nice - [email protected]

Can't tell you a whole lot, but I am on St. John and there are a couple of salons, Grapevine and Beauty Lounge, as well as two resorts, the Westin and Caneel, who offer massage. Not sure how hard or easy it would be to get a job at any of the places. There are several people who do it 'on their own', but I don't think anyone is getting rich off of it. It's more about building a reputation for yourself. If you can get down here and start doing massage for the locals they would be pretty helpful in keeping you booked since tourists often ask who we recommend.

I know more than a few people who love Hawaii and love St. John equally as well. I've never been to Hawaii...so I can't give you much other than that!

Not sure if this is what you meant in your last statement....but the drinking age here is 18. So you can hit happy hour 😀 It's very easy to meet people here on St. John. You will know just about everyone in a couple of months since we are a small community of about 5,000 full time residents. Good luck with school!!! Not sure if you did it already, but you should post on the other forum this site offers, the Relocation Board under the VI Moving Center tab at the top of the page.

When ever you make a change like moving to the VI you should realize that there are only 120,000 spread over three islands (about 50,000 for St. Thomas and St Croix and 10,000 for St. John. That means that the number of job opertunities is very limited. So you should be very careful. I would suggest that you come here FIRST and do a pre move visit. Then stay if you like it and can find employment that will support you. You should look at the average numbers for cost of living here posted on this web page. You may see numbers that will then drive you to a better decision.

As far as being gay I don't think that this is an issue, more than it would be on the main land.
