Hi all,

Last January we visited St. John for the first time and loved it! We found a great price on Continental by booking in August on a one-stop flight from Portland, Maine - Newark - STT. After numerous schedule changes the non-stop part from Newark to STT was deleted and we had to go Portland - Newark - San Juan - STT. Does anyone know if the non-stop Newark to STT flight gets deleted regularly in January?

I realize all the airlines go through schedule changes. We are just trying to avoid extra stops and get to STT as early as we can on our trip back to St. John in January 2011. Boston has cheaper prices but would rather fly out of Portland if we can.

Thanks for any advice. Glad to have found this board!

I fly the non stop from Newark about 4 times a year. It is canceled for some days in September and October but I have always had it when I needed it in January. Remember that it does not always fly every day. So you just need to look.

You can call and ask the question but book on line! Save a few dollars.

Billd,

I guess I was just unlucky last year with the schedule changes.

Just to clarify, the schedule changes where they deleted the non-stop flights from Newark happened some months after I booked that flight on-line. They would have refunded my money but all the other options had gone up in price by then.

I guess it's the risk when a flight is booked 5 months in advance. Thanks for responding!

Months after we booked, our AA return fight non-stop from STT to JFK was cancelled and we were rescheduled on a flight going through SJU a little later in the day. The same flight #412 was not change on any other days. Perhaps the pilot had a dental appointment or the plane was scheduled for maintenance that day. My friend and I just see it as two opportunities to get bumped and collect free tickets for next year rather than one. We would not be of such forgivng spirit if this were the flight from JFK to STT.

It's been my experience that Continental always has a non-stop from Newark in January....I usually fly there that month. There are 2 non-stops on Saturday.

Gerie - nice that you got some free tickets out of it!

Future Islander - that's just what I was wondering. Thanks.

I will staying in st john x1 week and will take a taxi from the airport to the Ferry. My car rental is in St John, Any ideas for the best way to purchase alcohol and groceries prior to boarding the ferry? I heard that is was very expensive in St John...just not how expensive for example Coffee? Bottled water? Soda? There are only the two of us so is it even worth worrying about it? Thanks!

Corey:

Pretty much your only option is to shop at Marina Market (across the road from the Ferry in Red Hook). It's a little bit more pricey, as compared to other markets on St. Thomas, but it does have a good selection. We usually start getting our supplies there. As for prices on St. John? I can't comment, since we don't do grocery shopping there.

Suggest that one of you watch your luggage at the ferry terminal while the other shops.

Don't forget if you have extra baggage for the ferry they will charge you. Soda at Marina Market iwill be pretty close to the price on STJ. Coffee on STJ, for example, is $14.99 for a 12oz bag of Starbucks at Starfish.
