Hi there,
I'm such a fan of this message board...very helpful info!
My hubby and I will be in STT at Frenchman's Reef Sept 7-11th. I still cant figure out whether to rent a car or just depend on taxis. The rental from STT airport is around $42 a day online.
Its a short trip and Sept 8th we are spending the day (my birthday!) sailing with Ike Witt (thanks to all the reccos on this board!)
I want to spend sunday (sept 9th) on STJ. Do you know if we can just take a ferry over and then just rent a jeep for the day at STJ? Is there any other way to see STJ besides renting?
Also I was thinking of doing the STT island tour for one of the other days ($25 per person). Do you know if we can do a daily car rental in STT and just tour the island by driving around ourselves?

I read that a bunch of places will be closed this time of year (so sad that the famed skinny legs is one of them)...does anyone have any good restaurant recommendations based on what will be open...including one for a special birthday dinner?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance!

A narrated island tour will be more informative than if you drive around yourselves. Also, if you decide to do something like shop downtown, a taxi will alleviate the need to find parking, which can be challenging there. Your resort may have cars for rent on a daily basis so you could just rent if/when you would like instead of for your entire stay. September isn't high season so you will probably be able to rent a vehicle in STJ at the ferry dock but if you prefer to be certain you'll get a car, you could try making a one day reservation with one of the STJ rental car companies.

We rented a car on STT and did a taxi tour of St. John $25/person. We really liked having a car on STT. No waiting for taxis, and renting a car is cheap compared to taxi fares. I personally wouldn't go back without a rental car. We've been with and without a car and the trip with the car was much better.
We didn't rent a car on STJ because I didn't want to spend a half of an hour going from rental place to rental place to find out about a car. We were on vacation! I didn't want the hassle!

As far as dinner goes, I loved Indigo. Their Friday night Caribbean lobster $36 was great. They also make excellent Mojitos! Good luck. KK

sounds good. I think I'll just call Marriot in advance and check with them about daily rentals. I agree the tour will be easier. Thanks!!

Thanks KK. I've heard a lot of good things about Indigo...will definitely have to go there now!
Can you tell me more about your STJ tour? did you set it up in advance? was it an open air vehicle?
thanks!

We were in an open air truck. When we got off of the ferry there were all kinds of people offering tours or taxi rides to different places. We had 6 people in our group. So I just asked one of the "taxi guys" about an island tour. If I remember correctly they had different tour lengths. We went on the 1 1/2 hour not the 3 hour. I thought it was great. We had only been to STJ one time before and never made it out of Cruz Bay. So for us it was a perfect tour. We had them end our tour at Trunk Bay. After that we took a taxi back to Cruz Bay for drinks and dinner. Good luck. KK

Can anyone confirm the fact that Skinny Legs will be closed the beginning of Sept.? If it is it would be a surprise as I have never seen it closed before. Renovations? WC repairs?

Go to the following link to see the closings on STJ - but if ZoZo's on STJ is open - great food.
