My daughter is having a destination wedding on Magens Bay in St. Thomas on 6/18/2009. I know this is probably a very warm time, but she is a teacher and only time she could plan it. Being so far away (Michigan) I have so many questions! Do you think Magens Bay will be too crowded with cruise ships during the wedding at 11:00 a.m.? I am going thru the wedding planners- Weddings the Island Way and using Blue Glass Photography- has anyone heard anything about either of these? We want to do something special after the wedding, we are having a reception when we return, so I don't mean a reception thing, I want something special, memorable. Any ideas? Her Fiance's last name is Hawks, so we thought about taking the ferry to Hawksnest for the day(it was too complicated to have the wedding there) Could we take the ferry in our wedding attire and change somewhere when we get to Hawksnest? Are there any restaurants, there? Are there bathrooms on the beach? I would appreciate and love any comments and advice anyone could give. There will be 11 people. I want this day to be very special for my Daughter, very memorable!

Weather in June won't be any warmer than any other time of the year - temperature between winter and summer varies only by a few degrees. At that time of year the cruise ship arrivals go down and there's not likely to be more than two ships in on that Thursday. Magens Bay is over a mile long and most of the wedding ceremonies take place to the far left away from the main concession area where most of the cruise ship passengers congregate, so that's not a problem.

I'm not familiar with Blue Glass Photography but Weddings The Island Way is a well established and respected business.

As far as going over to Hawksnest is concerned you might look into renting a boat charter for your group. In order to get to Hawksnest you would have to ferry over to Cruz Bay on St John and then taxi from there and there are no facilities on the beach. You could probably arrange with one of the larger boats for a private charter and that would be a great trip. Hope that helps a little!

Thanks so much! What are the names of some of the boat charters that I could possibly charter for the day?

If you click on "St Thomas" at the top of this page, scroll down to "Activities" and then to "Daysails," you'll find a quite comprehensive list of possibilities. Obviously the 6-packs (boats which take max 6 passengers) won't do but there are several options amongst those who can take more passengers. If you think this is something which could work for you, I'm sure other locals and contributors can suggest other boats, too. Happy researching!

Thanks so much for being very very helpful 🙂 I also would like to ask if you could recommend a great lunch or dinner spot? I would like something with a great view and of course great food! A fun and friendly atmosphere that could add to our wedding day festivities and make it special! Any ideas?
Thanks,
Nancy (mother of the bride)

Lunches are always very good at the Blue Moon Cafe which is at Secret Harbour, right on the water and very pretty.

For dinner I always recommend the Banana Tree Grille at Bluebeard's Castle which has a beautiful harbor and town view and a consistently good menu at reasonable prices. Chef Patrick has been with the owners for over 20 years and knows his stuff! They will go out of their way to ensure you have a memorable dinner.

Blue Moon's website is www.bluemooncafevi.com and Banana Tree Grille's is www.bananatreegrille.com. I'm sure you'll get more suggestions. Cheers!

My husband and I got married last May on Linquist beach at 10am.....there were 4 or 5 people at the beach at that hour. It was perfect. Magens is a much more advertised beach and has been crowded the times I have visited.
I used Alain at Blue Glass photography.....he was excellent. He really took time to get the right shots, we were very pleased.
Hawksnest beach is one of my favorites.

Oh my gosh, Alain is who we are using! I saw pictures on his website and they were beautiful which is why I chose him. Did you use a wedding planner service for your wedding? We chose Weddings the Island Way - I am sure it is more than what we could have paid, if we did everything ourselves, but it seemed so hard to arrange everything, we live in Michigan. I am concerned about too many people on the beach, but it is at 11:00 am and it is in June, not their busiest time, and it is big, like STT Resident posted above, so I pray that it isn't a problem. I would love to see some of your pictures?? I could send you my email if you wouldn't mind. I am going to ask my planner if we should change the location? Also may I ask what you did after your wedding? Its kinda hard with it having to be so early? I want to do something special, any suggestions?? And did you do any snorkel trips or anything else that you would recommend???
Thanks so much!
Nancy (mother of the bride)

I would second Lindquist Beach/Smith Bay Park as a location.
One of my favorite beaches in the VI.

You may want to consider getting a large power boat like Magic Moments (Nauti Nymph)
That would afford a place for folks to change.

At Hawknest you do have the large pavillions with picnic tables, but there is a recreation facility over at Oppenheimer /Gibney beach (also on Hawknest Bay). I think a large boat has a chance of getting in by the recreation center not sure about Hawknest proper. Maybe work with Caneel and arrange for a drop off on their dock and a taxi over.

Give the couple our best from all on vinow.

nborsodi congrats to you and yours also...

Just remember after May 18 the water may not always be as blue or the days as sunny

But rest assured that after 30+ years of marriage there has been a lot more sun than rain and the weather is improving every day.

So on your big day take a good picture in your mind and store it in your heart.

You may have to pull it out every now then... 😎

Pm me if you are interested in a private yacht for the trip ... we might also arrange some sort of dinner celebration.

Lindqvist has SOME basic bathroom facilities in situ. Magens has full bathroom/shower facilities, plus bar, and snack restaurant (which really isn't too bad at all) plus a nice gift shop. Magens also has chaise and kayak rentals plus, underneath the trees, has gratis picnic benches.

I don't think that Lindqvist has chair rentals but of course that could change by the time "your" wedding is to take place.

The area of Magens where the wedding planners conduct the ceremonies is generally towards the far left of the beach away from whatever activity takes place around the general concession area. Think I said that before. A paved road takes you right there and there are full bathroom facilities immediately adjacent. Trust me that your wedding coordinator knows of what she speaks - she's a longtime resident (not as long as me but I'm a dinosaur!) so do consult with her if you have any doubts or questions.

The Magens Bay Authority which has for so long maintained and preserved that property has only recently taken over the operation of Lindqvist (Smith Bay Park) and, although they have already made great progress in turning it into a much safer haven and are dedicated to preserving it as a pristine environment, they still have a long way to go as they don't rely on government funding (if you don't live here you've no idea what an incredibly worthy concept this is!)

For a group as large as yours (11 people) I would absolutely go with Magens. It's highly unlikely that Lindqvist will have more than the very basic facilities in place than they have right now come June.

Lordy Lordy I'm getting swept up in all this planning angst and don't even KNOW any of you! Cheers!

These pictures were taken at Magens Bay. I am sorry I have nothing for you on Lindquist.

My advice to you would be to look at their web sight and look at some of the photos of the two locations. Notice the back drops and go from there! Hope this helps!

Thanks STT Resident and Sherri! Great information! I appreciate it! I did talk with my planner today , she is so great! and sooooo helpful, I can't wait to meet her in person! Being such a great planner, she gives me the information, but of course I have to make the decision, and frankly, I am a horrible decision maker! Especially in the midst of wedding planning!! But I am going to look at all the pictures on the websites and hopefully come to some decision by next week, so wish me luck! Like I told Tina today, this is a one shot deal, so of course I want to pick the best location for my daughter's wedding! They both are big on pictures so of course I want to pick the best place for great photos! Everybody seems so nice on here- I can't wait to visit St. Thomas!!!
