hi all, can you still park at red hook while its under construction? if not i will need directions to the high school. also how far is it? hope we can walk. otherwise it defeats the purpose of renting the car. also is there parking by molly malones by dock d? was told we could maybe park there for the day for a charter. thanks for the info, scooby

scooby: You really want to go to high school huh?? 😀 The parking lot is actually past the high school (which is across from East End Cafe, kinda), at the corner where the road goes out to Secret Harbour and the Ritz. There is a sign that says "St John Ferry Parking" and there are usually 4-5 cars parked in the whole thing! If you park by Molly's and go to St John. you could be booted. Believe me.

Now that I reread your question, you are going on a day charter? If the folks who book the charter tell you it is okay to park at American Yacht Harbor, I guess it is.

scooby: Are you going on the ferry or are you going on a charter out of AYH? I am now very confused...

I think if school is in session you won't be able to use their parking lot. Maybe they open it up on the weekends like they did over the summer. They charged five bucks and it was worth it. There aren't any all day parking lots I'm aware of except for the lot near the intersection which takes you to Cabrita Point, the Ritz, etc. It's probably a half mile walk or more.
If you park at AYH or across the street at Red Hook Plaza you run a really high risk of being booted or towed. There's a 3 hour maximum for parking there. Most everyone I know who works around the area just finds a spot on the road to park. My boyfriend does everyday. He works out of AYH and he doesn't get to park there. Just on the street like everyone else.
Sorry there isn't a better solution.

When are they saying that the ferry dock and parking lot in Red Hook will be completed?

Hey
Last summer during the "off season",we were able to get an on the street parking space close to the ferry and didn't have any problems at all. I am the Queen of getting The Best parking spot as opposed to my husband who takes the 1st one he spots, unless we're in the Corvette which is NEVER next to another car! Know what I mean? Scooby when will you be there?

I have seen other posts for get togethers, we will be there 3/15 to 3/25 and would love to meet up with some familiar names from this post, maybe Iggies? Just a thought!

Scooby - you have me totally confused also. Whether you're going to take the ferry or pick up a charter, you're right in the middle of high season and you're well advised, at least in my opinion as someone who navigates THROUGH Red Hook several times a week and passes through the total jam-up, to park up the car and take a taxi. Your life will be much simpler for a few extra dollars.

Scooby, just for the heck of it I was going through Red Hook yesterday around 10AM, back again at 3PM and clocked the parking on the side of the road. It was jam-packed for 4/10 of a mile in both directions!

stt resident, hi,thanks for the info. we were going to rent a car for the whole week. and i have a charter going out of ayh one day, and need to park close to the ferry another day to go to st. john. with the parking problems, i've decided to only rent a car for a day or two to see the island of st. thomas. then take taxis the rest of the time.i didn't think parking was going to be that much of a problem. really wanted the freedom of a car, but oh well. thanks everyone for the info. have a great day! scooby

If you're going to be in Red Hook to get on a charter or a day sail you'll be there early enough to find parking on the road. Your car shouldn't be bothered because there will be hundreds of other cars parked along the side of the road as well so what are the chances? Besides, it's a rental and if you're going to worry that much about it then get the extra insurance offered by the rental company. It may be worth the peace of mind. My boyfriend parks on the road everyday for at least 7 or 8 hours and other than maybe a 5 or 10 minute walk to get to the docks it hasn't been a problem.
