Having been to several Islands in the past years I noticed lots of locals coming up to us wanting to sell drugs. This happened on the street , in the hotel elevator and while sunning at the beaches. Will we encounter this at STX?

Considering the Buccaneer has no elevators, you will not be approached in a hotel elevator.

I view the dealers as just another 'beach vendor' trying to get by. While I don't necessarily agree with the product I respectfully tell them no thank you. Once they understand there will be no sale they move on. Most of the beach vendors I've seen, no matter what the product or island, seem to be pretty astute businessmen in that once i tell them no they usually leave me alone the rest of the time i'm there.

We were in Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie several times over the course of our stay recently and were never approached even once. Las Vegas -- different story.

Sorry to hear about the drug activity. I have been to all of the US Virgin Islands quite frequently over the past 10 years. I was just there the entire months of March and April and the previous November and December staying on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John (mostly on St. Thomas) and I have NEVER been approached to buy drugs. Maybe a coconut or art item but never drugs.

I hope you told the management so they can be more attentive to the people entering the hotel. I certainly hope St. Croix is/was better. Be sure to take a drive through the rain forest and grab a smoothie at the smoothie stand!

On a lighter note, if you want something really addictive the next time on St. Thomas go eat at the Pie Hole. You'll never want pizza anywhere else! I can't wait, I'm flying in this Friday and it will be my first stop!

Happy travels y'all !!

Hi There,
The only time that I was ever approached to buy anything was while walking to Coki Beach from the former Renaissance Grand Beach's back gate. And I believe it was because we must have been staring at a few guys smoking. I suggest if you see a group of people and are wondering what they are doing, just don't stare.
Regards
LB

mossy, I hope your mind has been put to rest on this issue. Unless you're daft enough to be walking around the back side of town after dark, public housing developments at any time (this presuming you're not only white but wear the "tourist" clothes which you think make you blend in but mark you immediately!), the Red Hook bar area in the wee hours of the morning or (even now, I've heard) the Yacht Haven Grande restaurants very late at night, you'll not be approached. And if you ARE approached during the day just politely say "No" and walk on.

For the benefit of those who come here who ARE looking for either smoke or anything else, don't be jerks. The prison facilities here aren't pleasant at all ... 😀

I love always love reading your comments! 😀

When we were there, we were approached once in Red Hook. It WAS New Years Eve though and was getting late. My husband swears it was an undercover cop though. He just told him no a few times and I had kept walking. We didn't have any other problems. Other than this incident, we felt secure the entire time - minus getting lost in what may have been a bad area at night, but no one bothered us by any means. Everyone on the islands are extremely friendly and there to make you happy - always offering rides, directions, suggestions, and just asking if you're having a good time. Besides, it's NO worse than what everyone is faced with at home if they make a few wrong turns late at night! We all come from areas where we know there are places you just shouldn't go. It's life!

I've been to STT, STJ and STX. Me and my husband witnessed people smoking pot at Coki Point but was never approached by anyone selling. Maybe we are too nerdy for that lol.

When in STX however we saw a local smoking crack close to rum runners. By no means did this person stop and offer to sell us anything though.

This can happen anywhere. We will be staying on STT, JVD and STJ next month. I'm not concerned in the least.

Enjoy your visit!! Cheers

Jen
