Hello,

We are arriving for our first real family vacation at the end of January with reservations at Point Pleasant.
We wanted to have the luxury of our own kitchen in addition to sampling local restaurant fare as our children do not have a large culinary list of favorites.

Any suggestions for grocery stores? or what to expect for selection and costs?

We were hoping to be traveling at a less busy time of the year. Is this true of January or haven't the Islands been affected by the slow down in US travelers?

Thanks to anyone with local info

I would recommend Marina Market in Red Hook. They have great meat, produce and deli depts. It is a small store, but has good quality. It is also close to Point Pleasant.

If you are going to rent a car then try Pueblo's which is just past Haven Site on the right. The market at Red Hook is nice but small. The prices are a little higher than Pueblo's. Marina Market is just that, a market. Pueblo's is more like a supermarket but is in a slightly rougher neighborhood. But, I made a few trips to Pueblo's at night and didn't have any problems. If you need a car contact Dependable Car Rental. They are very nice and have always gone out of their way to be helpful. My wife and I went back last August and brought our 15 year old son and 8 year old daughter. I don't think a day passed when we weren't in the water and hiking. We went on a day sail on New Horizons II for the second year in a row and the kids went wild. Can't wait for next year!!!!

Hi There,

One more to consider is Plaza Extra at Tutu Mall. I think it's open until 11:00 everynight and it's in a shopping mall so there are always lots of folks around. IMO it's a little larger than Pueblo and a bit newer also. I've found the prices to be comparable at Pueblo and Plaza Extra.

For harder to find items and 'gourmet' type things, your best bet is either Marina Market or the Gourmet Gallery at either Havensite or Crown Bay.

You also have some 'warehouse' type places that will give you better prices, but you need to buy in large quantity which doesn't make sense with a lot of things on a short vacation stay.
