Hello - I'm thinking of taking a vacation with my parents (I'm 25) and am contemplating St. John's for 4 or 5 days. We've never been to the Caribbean before, but enjoyed Hawai'i. My mom is vegetarian and won't do any swimming/water activities (except for sailing/boating) - are there many vegetarian options available? How's the weather in June? Is it too hot to sit by the beach for much time without swimming?

What other activities are there on St. John's? I was planning on doing a day sail to BVI and I read about some hikes - are they pretty easy to undertake? Are there any botantical gardens around? Not sure if St. Thomas would be a better option?

Thanks. Appreciate your help.

Great boating - good vegetables - good fruit - nice weather in June - shade available on most beaches - many hiking options ,some easier than others -much beautiful flora and many private gardens and viewable landscaping - Caneel Bay is somewhat of a botanical garden - Josephine's in St J is worth a look - STT and STX do have botanical attractions - no S in St John - shopping and artists work a nice ST J activity.

On most beaches, there are shady spots to camp out in. You'll want to do this even if you go in the water just to get a break from the sun. June is a beautiful time of year and you'll have a great time. Vegetarians are accommodated very well at most restaurants here in STJ and there are private chef services (like ours) that can come to your villa and create your dream menu. There is a botanical garden in STT, although I think they are geared more for private parties (we cooked there for a wedding once). I think they go by the name of Botanical Villa. Ask for Jackie. She and her husband Klaus own it.

Hiking trails in STJ are plentiful and easily accessible. NPS can set you up on the Reef Bay trail by taking you to the head and picking you up by boat at the bottom, plus many more. There's also kayaking, biking, parasailing, shopping, and dining.

Have fun whatever you decide to do !

Thanks for the comments! Very helpful. Caneel Bay looks like a nice place to stay. Is there any need to rent a car if we're only on the island for 4 - 5 days? Caneel Bay seems to pick you up at St. Thomas airport. Do we need a car to do the hikes or get to the port where the day sails leave from? Are there many other restaurants near Caneel Bay? Not sure if just cabbing it for a few days would be better.

Thanks again!
