We are 95% decided on going to St. John for my 40th *cough* birthday. We've always stayed in STT and just day tripped to STJ. Since we are only going to be there for 5 nights, don't want to rent a car, and like the fact that children under 5 aren't allowed, we have decided on Gallows Point as the place to stay.

Has anyone who has stayed there have a recommendation/warning about particular suites? We are leaning towards an upper suite.

We are going the week after Mother's Day. Let me know what you think, the good, bad, and the ugly! Thanks.

Oh, and will we need passports? 😉

We stayed in 15D and it was just perfect for us. It was one of the more updated units with lovely tropical furniture and a great location near the pool. We would take a dip in the pool and hot tub after dinner each night and then walk right in to bed. Our friends stayed in 1C which was also very nice and had the advantage of being a shorter walk from the office area when coming and going each day but was a longer way from the pool. We rented our unit through Suite St. John and our friends rented directly through Gallows. Even though our rental was through the rental agency, the people at Gallow's treated us no differently than our friends. Everyone there was so pleasant to deal with and Crystal especially was very helpful. We walked in to town for dinner each evening and also utilized their gift shop for some of our snorkel equipment rentals. They called us a taxi if we wanted to be picked up at Gallow's instead of down the hill in town and the taxi drivers would take us back to Gallow's if we just ask for a couple of dollars more than dropping us in Cruz Bay. We loved everything about Gallow's and would stay there again in a heart beat!

Richmond - sorry I can't help you with gallows point accomodations but I did find this info about passports on www.myheadhurts.nut - it states that in lieu of passports while traveling to the USVI you can bring meat or a recent photograph of Kenny Chesney - who ever he is.

Happy Birthday

Steve

CruzBayB, are those upper or lower units? We've been looking through the Gallows Point website, and were going to go through them. Are the prices better through Suite St. John? I really appreciate your input.

It's weird how after staying at the same place for so long, I'm thrown by a slight change in location! But everyone seems to have more fun in STJ.

Thanks Steve! The was the perfect response. 🙂

I appreciate the reminder though. Since it's just going to be the two of us, I'm going to purchase a 20 lbs. beef tenderloin from Costco, keep it in the freezer until we leave, and pack it in my suitcase. I figure it should be ready to cook once we get there!

Oh, are there any indoor pools on STJ? The sun and sand bother me.

There is one villa you can rent that has an "indoor" pool (why I've never figured out) but apart from that there are none.

I would suggest you pack your meat in another suitcase than the ones with your clothes - God help you if your luggage is delayed by a day or too 🙂

Richmond, we always stay at Gallows and rent through Suite St John. It's a preference and have been booking through them since the days we stayed at Lavender. Suite St John owns the units they rent, but you get the same services as mentioned from Gallows. I would suggest calling Richard Methaney of Suite St John.

I had read somewhere, but not sure if it still holds that when you rent a particular view, ocean/garden or whatever, you are just guaranteed a unit, not necessarily a specific unit. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

I have some pix of Gallows at www.pbase.com/promoguy101

If you have any specifics, shoot me a pm.

I am not associated with Suite St John, just like to highly recommend them.

I rented thru Richard, and you do get a particular unit. Not sure how many he owns now, but he has quite a few. I have stayed harbor side and ocean side and I prefer upper unit (for the views) ocean side. I can't remember the exact unit we stayed in, but if you go on their site you can see a map of each unit. Try to get the one that sticks out the most (towards the water). You have a lot more privacy ( if you get my drift).

We had an upper unit and loved it. I think it was 2C.
The views were great.

Gallows is one fine choice. Stayed there 41 times!

Let's see...

Ocean View Upper - a must. Primo units: 3C, then 3D, 1C, 2C, 15C or 15D. As long as I'm not occupying, 3C is by far the best -- no neighbors decks and the view is like you're on the water itself.

Great location. Walk to town. Excellent sunset bar (Jax).

Good luck!

The units I described at Gallow's were both Upper units... Our rental prices may have varied slightly but were otherwise right on target with the ones from Gallow's directly. I would be very careful renting a unit that no one has told you about because we stayed one night in another unit and it was not nearly as nice as 15D or 1 C. Also, keep in mind that these are not extreme luxury condos like you mind find in Destin, Florida or the Bahamas, but they are nice and convenient and "beachy" for lack of a better word. We were very pleased with our stay there and I don't hesitate to suggest them as a great place to stay near Cruz Bay.

Thank you all for your input. I am going to check with Suite St. John as well as booking directly through Gallows Point. We are 100% in agreement about staying in an upper unit. I would like the ocean vs the harbor view, but the Mr. reminded me that the $$$$ saved could go towards something tangible. Is that Jewels I hear calling my name for a visit?

Over the next few days, I may be PMing some of you for more info. Although, I will probably rely on Promo's advice more because, well, he can hum "Conquest" and you can't. (I keed, I keed) 😉

Our first stay at Gallows was through Suite St. John - it was unit 8D, I believe - GLORIOUS!!!!!

This next stay, we're going directly through Gallows because we are getting 3C :-)!!

From all I've read (many many many reveiews) you can't go wrong with going through either. I do know that Suite St. John does not offer certain units - I think it's the lower harbour units - but you can figure it out by looking at their website.

As for Gallows in general, I think it is the PERFECT place on the island that affords the BEST of EVERYTHING: It is Right on the water (not many villas are) - not only do you get a phenomenal view - but you HEAR & SMELL THE WATER TOO!!!- and some of the BEST SNORKELING is RIGHT THERE!!! It is an easy 4-5 minute walk into Cruz Bay. Although we rent a Jeep, it's wonderful to be able to walk into town for breakfast, dinner or shopping - no parking to deal with, etc. DAILY MAID SERVICE: So nice to come back after a day at the beach, hiking, etc. to find your bed made, bathroom shiny & clean with replenished toiletires & fresh towels (anytime you want them!) Nice, well-stocked (cookware, utensils, etc.) kitchen. Beach chairs & cooler to take with you on your daily adventures. There is also a handy little on-site store for renting snorkeling gear, food, wine, goodies, coffee. I don't think you can go wrong with Gallows! 🙂

ENJOY!

Lisa

One difference between Suite St. John & Gallows ... While both places take a credit card for the deposit, Suite St. John only took a check for the balance. ALSO, Suite St. John required the balance to be paid 30 days prior to arrival, where Gallows took a credit card and the balance is billed on the day of departure... I like getting points on my credit card.... and I prefer paying for the balance on the day I leave as opposed to 30 days before I arrive.
NOTE: this was Suite St. John's policy in 2005 - it may have changed.
