OK now before i get started i will tell everyone why we only went down for 3 nights 4 days(Boo Hoo Hoo)
We live in Fla and are in the Construction business
The economy here as well as just about everywhere else is horrible so their is really no construction going on, cant sell your house and no one is building (Insurance, taxes ect...)so we really were not planning a week vacation this year (Financial Reasons if you get my drift, NO MONEY)
We have heard that construction is still strong in STT so i made arrangements for job interviews at the Marriott and with other leads we had found.
So when Spirit Advertised $34.00 each way we jumped on it, but you have to go and come back on the sale days only, and with that said I BOOKED 4 TICKETS, One for a guy that works under my husband and the other for my sister(Both have never been)we will call them NEWBIES.
To make a long story short we changed our place to stay 3 different times before we left due to the change in times for his interviews from our Future employers.
We ended up booking at a villa BY OWNER at Point Pleasant ($200.00 a night)
Our flight left at 6:44 a.m. on the 23rd and since we live 3 hrs from FLL we left the day before, and stayed at the Ramada Plaza for only $46.00 a night
We thought when we got their it would be horrible but to our surprise it was pretty good, Not the Ritz or anything but it works for a place to lay our heads or so we thought
First thing that happened we called down and asked for more towels at 9:00 p.m. and got them right away no problem
Finally go to sleep around 11:00pm and next thing you know the phone is ringing at midnight asking us if we got our towels yet(What were they thinking)
OK can get over it and try to go back to sleep, but NOOOOOO the fire alarm in our room goes off at 12:30am for no reason, we all fly out of bed and now we are really awake and getting cranky knowing we had to be up at 3:30am
Finally drift off and the next thing i know my HB is dreaming, jumps out of bed walks over to the window and is trying to open it to climb out thinking that the room is filled with smoke(we are in a non smoking room)Normally i would have let him as would have been laughing my butt off but we were on the 5th floor
so i coax him back to bed and a half hr later the alarm goes off.
Everyone gets ready to leave but HB cant find the only pair of flip flops he brought
"Where did you take them off at?" "At the pool last night but i thought i picked them up""Well go down and look for them"
"But the pool area is locked"
Now i haven't had any sleep and i can feel my blood pressure rising ever so slightly
"I GUESS I'll GO TO THE FRONT DESK TO LOOK THROUGH LOST AND FOUND"
Nope notta thing no shoes
Luckily our buddy the newbie brought an extra pair
Of f to the airport and have an uneventful trip going down - STT here i come!!!!
We check in one bag and it came through right away -so far so good
Called Thrifty and they were their in 5 minutes -even better!
Now were off to Point pleasant
We pull up and are thinking WOW look at the Views, look at this hotel!
We unlock our front door -nice view
started walking around and found that the place was very outdated, falling apart and the pull out couch that we need had a broken middle bar so you couldn't sleep on it, But look at the view.
Now before you all think I'm such a snob i just think we should have gotten something better for $200.00 a night don't you?
OK enough of this we are going down to Fungi's to eat lunch and finally get my Pain Killer!!!
Had a good lunch of:
Appetizers- Conch fritters (OK but very small) and a new thing we have never tried "fungi" (Very Good)
Main course- all had Mahi sandwiches (Yummy) can never go wrong with Mahi Mahi
Drinks- Pain Killers for myself and sister and Ice tea for the guys as they had to meet the first job interview man at 4:30pm
The lady we rented from came down to meet us and to see if every thing was OK with our villa
She was so nice and i felt bad that i was complaining to our group about our accommodations that i didn't say much to her about the shape or cleanliness of the villa or maybe it was because i was finally drinking a Pain Killer and looking out to a beautiful view or just happy to get to go back to my beloved VI'S(Guess i started comparing it to Stone Cottage, but of course their is no comparison)
We still had 21/2 hrs before we had to meet up with the interview Man so we decided to take the newbies to Coki beach since it was so close.
Feeding the fish was a blast and "Thore our waiter on the beach made up for all the stress i was having before we got down their
Next thing you know this interview Man calls and informs HB that the meeting location has changed and the new location will be at a bar for happy hour down in French town (Bells are starting to go off in my head)Who interviews at a bar during Happy Hour? I guess if your on Island time you do, but oh well he might just land this job if the owner is tanked right?)
We say goodbye to the guys at 3:45 or so and they are off and we stay put and have a blast with "Thore"
Feeling better by dusk we head back to the Villa and wait for the guys then its off to Duffy's for the evening.
So heres the complicated part..
HB had already made a interview at the Marriott on Friday am
The 1st interview Man decided he just wanted to party the first night and told HB to meet him at his construction site on Fri am, now how are we going to do this?
Wake up Friday am run to the Marriott meet the head guy Or so we thought he was the head guy only to be told that the head Head guy was in a meeting and could not see him today but handed us a phone book and said you can start looking for some construction companies through their (WHAT)
WHAT A WASTE OF OUR TIME (Errrrrrr)
Ok were not getting discouraged yet, we call the Man from the night before at 9:00am to tell him where we are so we can follow him to the construction site. He informs us that he is running 45min late,
Ok in the mean time we had already made plans with Sherri (from the forum and her hubby Jeff for the day of boating and then Dinner at Indigo's and to meet up with forum member RonUSVI.)
I call Sherri and inform her of whats going on and She says not to worry just work on getting the job(Luv you girlfriend)
45 minutes later we are following the main man to his construction job site way way way up on the mnt, very nice view i must say!
The guys talk business, my sis and i make ourselves scares and were off again to follow the Man to the Marina
Now why do we need to go to the Marina?HB say s the Man said to follow him and thats what were doing so off we go
Get to the Marina and he just wanted to show off his yacht and to get it ready for his weekend trip to STX( Now I'm Stressing)
We were their about a half hour an were off again following the Man to his house all the way up to Mtn Top
So i ask Why are we going to his house?
HB replies: "because he wants to go their and talk more business" ( now I'm getting stressed again because hrs have gone by and Sherri and Jeff have been waiting patiently for us to go out on their boat)
Now mind you we did not bring bathing suites, towels or any of the above thinking we would have plenty of time to go back to the Villa to change- NOT
Call Sherri and tell her whats going on
But shes such a champ she says they will wait
On the way up to Mtn top he stop at every lookout for us to take pictures
I ALREADY HAVE THESE PICS
But at least my sis and other newbie got to see the awesome views, as we didn't have time on this trip to show them everything
Get up to his house -very nice, the best view -now when are we going to talk business- NOT
All he wanted to do is have someone to party with
WHAT ABOUT THE JOB
He informs my HB after about 1/2hr that hes retiring and probably wont be able to put him to work.
Why could'nt anyone not tell us this a month ago over the many phone calls before we came down?
Very Frustrating
We finally leave and are driving like maniacs to get to the villa to change and then drive to Hull Bay to meet Sherri and Jeff for a most memerable day(Thanks again Sherri and Jeff)

More to come from that Wonderful afternoon and evening, getting tired of typing

Gobucs:

Sounds discouraging already.......

Being an owner at Point Pleasant......you may have gotten a better deal booking through the resort. We participate in the rental pool with Antilles Resorts and our rates (for off-season) for a Superior Suite (what you had) are lower than what you paid. Plus we have to meet certain updating requirements. And yes, the views are incredible!

Hope the rest of your report is better!

Hey Gobucs!

Wow, you seem to have alot more patience then I would of. So sorry about that construction business. Times are tough all over. But, can't wait to hear more about your trip.

It was so funny when I read that you met "Thor". He's one of a kind isn't he? We befriended him when we went to Coki with our crew of 9 and we talked to him almost all day. Will post a couple pics of him that I have on a disc somewhere. How about that hair??????? He did take care of though, while my husband had about a 2 hour conversation/debate about the Eagles vs. the Cowgirls...oops, sorry, I meant Cowboys. :o)

Hey Gobucs,
Loved reading what you have written thus far and you explained things to the T, very good detail! Can't wait to read the rest for sure! For those who don't know, Gobucs and HB stayed at Stone Cottage last year for a week and had a wonderful time! We didn't get to see much of them, busy, busy, busy!!!! Was fun to see much more of them this time!
Can't wait to read the rest! 🙂

Bummer Gobucs...

I Hope the job prospects inprove for you soon. I don't think construction is good anywhere in the world except STJ...it's nonstop over there. We are stuck in a nothing selling rut here in New England also. It will turnaround...and then you'll be back to spending 10 days down there next year! Lot so painkillers to come! Thanks for the report.

"I don't think construction is good anywhere in the world"

Excuse me? Are you serious? Anywhere in the world? WOW!

You need to get out more. The world is a big place. It's not just your cubicle.

We've been self employed contractors for 26 years and yes it has it's ups and downs, but you have to move with the market. We move from new construction to remodeling as the seasons change. 🙂 What about remodeling for landlords. It's pretty good daily money here. Try kitchen remodeling...great profits. Bathrooms, additions, additional garages, there are tons of projects that the seniors in FLA would be happy to pay for. My Dad promoted some private contractor in Venice, FL and helped his kitchen remodel business build into a million dollar enterprise. You have to hit the nitch.

Why isn't there more construction in FLA with Hurricane Charley, etc from a few years ago. I know homes in Punta Gorda that had to wait over 1 year to be remodeled. It was very frustrating for the homeowners down there. It took one couple 6 months to have someone help them remove their boat from their living room. Relatives we know down there are very frustrated that they can't get remodeling done fast enough.

GoBucs,
What type of construction are you in? Or is your husband in? Florida has hidden work, as do most places. PM me if you wish, there are tons of possibilities. Here in the west, there is tons of work. You just have to search it out. Be proactive. We have CA folks moving here with much cash in their pockets. They purchase their homes outright and are ready to finish their basements, or remodel their kitchen or add a deck. It's still happening and it's very profitable.
