I never in my life thought that one short cruise ship shore excursion and later a one week vacation to a place would have such an impact on me.

I am soooo missing STJ right now. I am craving a visit to Shela's, and the Tourist Trap, and Big Belly Deli. I am dying to sit in the shade on Lameshur and listen to the waves roll the pebble around. I want to sink my toes into the creamy sand at Hawksnest and Maho. I want to relax with friends and soon-to-be-friends at the Beach Bar with a Painkiller or two.

If you are reading this, and have NOT been to the VI, prepare for "changes in attitude" - possibly life-altering changes.

If you have been there, you know what I mean.

That donkey looks like the one that stuck his head in my jeep window in Coral Bay about 5 years ago. I think he wanted my sandwich which I gave him. My husband said to give him the beer to wash it down with. Lil As for the 2 chicks in the bikinis I would kill my husband if he took that or was it the water you were really after? LoL

Careful, we had the same experience with St. Thomas--ended up buying a place.

My husband and I go to St. John every year (this Feb was our 4th trip), we started out on a 7 day vacation, added a few days the next year, this year was 3 weeks. In all out trips there I've never wanted to go home. This year was the worst. We were 3 days from leaving when I confronted my husband and begged him to make our trip longer, I just wasn't ready to go home. I love the island so much that I actually begged and pleaded and eventually made a promise to not buy another pair of shoes for 3 years (I think that was a bit crazy) if he let me change the airfare. He finally caved and we stayed another 4 nights. Now all I have to do is figure a way out of the whole shoe thing but that's another story.

So this year after coming home I decided there had to be a way to bring the island to our home. So after a few weeks of being depressed and missing the island I decided to paint the entire interior of our house in Caribbean beach theme. I just finished glueing starfish to parts of walls throughout the house, I'm getting ready to hang my caribbean getco's and crabs.

I figure if I can't be on the island I might as well make my home look like an island home and pretend. I'll crank the heat, make some painkillers, cook up some fish on the grill and make the best of it until next year.

Hi notahippie! I was thinking about you the other day. I know you like Shela's Pot a lot, and I've got another suggestion for your next visit. Check out P & P by the Sea. Call and make a reservation for Friday or Saturday night. My West Indian better half and addicted to Patrica's food! Good West Indian food and been meaning to tell you about it. You are coming down soon, aren't you?

I did the same thing as Sapphire and bought a place. We spent close to 3 months on the island last year but only 4 days so far this hear. I check all of the webcams daily and log on to this forum to get my daily dose of the islands. We just missed yet another winter storm last night. I am soooo ready to just take the plunge and move!

Back in 1985 I bought a condo at Crystal Cove on STT. Thought it would be a good investment and a place I could get out of the cold. Bought another condo at Crystal Cove in 1990. Now I was going down to STT about three weeks a year. Over the years I found that all my vacation time was now being spent in STT. In 2001 I bought a hurricane damaged house from Marylynn. It had sat for about 6 years. I fam still fixing up the house up and then I finally moved down in 2003 and made STT my year round home. What a life changing event. I left NJ, the garbage state where they tax you on everything to STT. What a change.

It is a wonderful place. Sure there some things that are bad. But on the whole it is a GREAT PLACE.

So when I go back to NJ I miss STT.

So I know how you feel.

I'll add P&P to the list - if I ever get back 🙁
This damned economy has hit hard - I haven't been laid off, but my hours and pay have been reduced. Mrs. Not-a-hippie was already working part-time. Unless there's a financial windfall from some celestial source, there will be no STJ for me and mine this year. We'll be lucky to be able to squeeze a weekend at my brother-in-law's Alabama lake house.

But the bar at my house is almost done, and I am doing all I can to make it remind me of The Tourist Trap and The Beach Bar - minus the sun, waves, ocean, and lobstah rolls.

We are leaving dreary Ohio for STJ next weekend, and after looking at those great pictures, notahippie, I can hardly wait! I have never been to STJ before but have visited STT a couple times on cruise ships. We are staying on the island for a week this time and I'm afraid I'll never want to come home again! I know how addicting the Caribbean can be. After our first cruise in 2003, we thought, gee, it would be nice to do this every couple years. We've gotten to the point that if we don't see sun, sand, and sea at least a couple times a year, we get grumpy and go into withdrawal!

We'll have to check out that P & P place someone mentioned. We like new foods and trying places the locals patronize. Where is it?

P & P By the Sea is on Moorehead Point. Please call them for reservations on Friday or Saturday. I have to dig around a little to get you their number....I'll get back to you. They do have lunch on some other days of the week, but I'm not sure if it is a set schedule. My better half usually gives them a call to see if they are cooking and to reserve a plate (he LOVES the conch!)

Cute Bar! A nice way to bring the Islands to you!
Hey, you should get one of those 7 foot lighted palm trees and throw a few shells at the base of it! 😀

I know what you mean. I'm experienceing the same thing. The islands get under your skin and in your soul. It has been a year since my husband and I have been there. The last month we have been discussing moving there. We miss being there. Waiting a few years for our oldest to graduate high school, and bring our younger one with us. Maybe we'll meet in a bar sometime.
Love your Pics notahippie
