Can I make it from Airport to the Territorial court to pick up our marraige lisence in time? Our plane lands (if on time) at 3:20 and the court closes at 5 pm. Has anyone had this problem. How far is the court from the airport. Thanks, Kara

I would think that you should have no problem making it. Maybe 15 minutes tops??

How far is the Court from Red Hook? I am arriving on a Sunday (staying on St. John)and going the next day to pickup my marriage license...was possibly thinking about walking but have no idea how far downtown is from the dock...probably too far!

Also how difficult is it to find the Courthouse?

Diane - We did the same thing - flew in on Sunday, stayed on St John, and took care of the courthouse on Monday. You can't walk from Red Hook to the courthouse - too far like you said (take a taxi). From Cruz Bay, take the ferry directly to Charlotte Amalie.

The courthouse is very easy to find in Charlotte Amalie - smile, say hello, and a local resident will gladly point you the way. If I recall correctly, the office was on the second floor. Great view of the harbor from their office! They had our paperwork that we had sent several weeks prior.

Because we were marrying almost four months later while on a cruise (hence taking care of courthouse while on vacation since a short wedding day in port on the cruise!), we left the paperwork there at the courthouse and our minister picked it up closer to the wedding date. We could sign the paperwork up to 12 months in advance, but it could not be "issued" unless within 3 months of the wedding. By doing all this on our vacation, we just had the wedding to worry about when returning.

Good luck with everything! We married on Hawksnest and have many, many fond memories.

How late is the court open?
I went there a few months ago at 5 past 3, and had to beg the person to talk to me- apparently, the division I was at closed at three. Not sure about licenses, though- does anyone know if it's open until 5?

....how about walking distance from the Charlotte Amalie dock? Is the legislature close enough from there?

Hello Diane,

The Legislature Building is not the court house.... but they are close to each other. I am thinking you mean the Havensight Dock... its a doable walking distance - maybe 20 minutes to the court house from the dock or a $3 taxi one way per person.

Diane: If you are talking about taking the town (Charlotte Amalie) ferry from St John, the legislature and the courthose are in walking distance. As you get off the ferry, you will walk to your right- past the green Legislature building and Fort Christian, the parking lot and voila- the Justice complex!

Sorry if I confused earlier -
"Diane - We did the same thing - flew in on Sunday, stayed on St John, and took care of the courthouse on Monday. You can't walk from Red Hook to the courthouse - too far like you said (take a taxi). From Cruz Bay, take the ferry directly to Charlotte Amalie."

I was referring to the ferry that goes directly from Cruz Bay to Charlotte Amalie for about $7 each (and not the cruise ship dock at Havensight). Hubby and I did the very short walk to take care of our marriage license, walked back to the ferry, and went back to St John. No problem at all - and I was even wearing a long skirt that day to look presentable to the court! 🙂

Thanks for the inforamtion - I wasn't sure about the name of the dock in downtown Charlotte Amalie, I thought it was just the Charlotte Amalie dock, I will have to write down Havensight....unless that is a completely different dock??

Havensight is where most cruise ships come in to dock. It is just outside Charlotte Amalie and about a $3 cab ride.
The area I was referring to is where the ferries come in - downtown Charlotte Amalie. It's the $7 ferry from Cruz Bay.
