Hi
Have heard varying opinions on whether it is a good idea to rent a car in St Thomas to take to St John. Reasons we want to do it are that our plane arrives at 3:20 and we need to get to the St Thomas Court for our marraige lisence by 5 pm, then we are going to the grocery store to stock up on groceries(I have heard they are cheaper at the grocery store in St Thomas than the smaller markets on St John). Insurance says it is covered in St John just not on the Ferry and we will save $170 by renting in St Thomas. Any major reason we shouldn't do this? Thanks, Kara

No problems necessarily with doing this. Just check with your rental co. that they permit you to even take the car to STJ--some rental agencies don't.
Also, some people prefer to rent on STJ to help the local rental cos. and/or to take advantage of parking at the STJ co. lots when hanging out in Cruz Bay.

Have fun either way.

Oh, and I forgot, you should check the car ferry schedule to STJ. I know that it runs on a severely limited basis, in comparison to the passenger, I'm not even sure if you can get one to STJ after 6pm!

We just got back from St. John. We had reserved from Hertz over the internet before we went. When we arrived we were told Hertz DOES NOT let cars from St. Thomas go over to ST. John. BIG mistake. Hertz, Avis and Budget are the only rentals in the airport. Avis had no cars and we ended up paying twice as much at budget for a small car. They really get you at the counter when you don't have a reservation. We had just wanted to pick up liquor in St. Thomas and we figured it would be easier to have the car instead of dragging suitcases on the ferry.

In the long run we figured the taxi to Red Hook and the passenger ferry were not that much more than the round trip car ferry ($35) You have to remember there are 3 different ferry companies and if you buy a round trip you must return on the same one. The last ferry is 7:15 pm. You can get the schedule on www.vinow.com.

When we go again we will probably rent in St.John. As was said you can then park in their lot during the day and parking is a problem in St. John. We didn't save a whole lot on liquor by buying in St. Thomas. We bought all our food in Starfish market which is a good size market with everything. I really don't think it is too much more than St. Thomas.

Hope this helps
