Does anyone know of less expensive long-term car rental? On my last trip down I heard that there was a guy who works at Crown Bay who rents cars for $25.00 per day, but I didn't get his phone #. I spend 4-5 weeks on island each winter and this would be a great savings over what I have had to pay at the airport rental agencies. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Andrew,

I just wanted to throw in a note that you might compare prices between the locations at the airport and their other locations not at the airport. I recall being told by one of the car rental agencies that cars rented there get an additional airport tax tacked on to the bill. This might save you a little.

Anyone have any other tips for saving on a long-term car rental?

You definitely pay more by renting at the airport. All car rental agencies tack on extra fees when you rent at the airport (everywhere, not just the USVI.)

I would talk to the owner of one of the local car rental agencies and see if you can negotiate a weekly or monthly rate. Of course, this may be hard as winter is high season and they can probably rent at their normal rates and be sold out.

Andrew:

We rent from Hertz or Avis (at the airport).

I just checked with Hertz (on-line) for January 2007 (4 weeks rental) with a AAA or Entertainment Book discount....... a midsize goes for about $27.14/day plus approx $5.70 per day tax/fees or about $32.85 per day total. A compact was about $2.00 per day less. Not far from your $25. per day request.

I don't know if the Avis off airport locations offer the same rates, but you could always call or check on-line.

Hope this helps,

F.I.

Thank you all for the good tips! I noticed also that Budget has a monthly rate that is even better than the weekly rate.
