Just curious about the off season. As I may have said long ago, we are coming 8-19-2008 through 8-27-2008. Just wondering if the island is less "touristy". I have been told that car rentals and other activities are not hard to get. Do the day sail people usually go to other places on earth.
I have noticed the threads on some of the car rental agencies, and I am not the type of person who wants to deal with someone who wants to charge me for a rusted scratch that was on the vehicle from 12 years ago. So I am asking in your honest opinion who is the most honest and credible agency to rent from?
And if you could choose one place to hang out 24/7 with the greatest atmosphere what would it be (on STJ)?
Thanks for a great community of people.
Bill

STJ will be very quiet. The island will not be busy but you will find that many restaurants will be closed. (stjohnspice.com usually posts a list of all restaurant closings)

I am not aware of any car rental that would charge for an old scratch, (and just and FYI you will NEVER find a 12 year old car on island)

The only place that I would ever choose to spend 24/7 would be the quiet of my villa put if you are looking to be out and about it would greatly depend on what side of the island you are staying and what is open while you are there.

P.S. I recommend purchasing Trip insurance as you will be traveling during hurricane season.

Off-season is great; it looks especially attractive after surviving spring break there. Some of the charter boats do head south out of the hurricane zone in the dangerous months.

Looking at past years, the closures seem to start in earnest in September. Xislandgirl is a veteran, so I defer to her on this.

We don't spend 24/7 anywhere. But we do visit our favorite watering holes most days: Quiet Mon, Beach Bar, Tap Room, Island Blues, Shipwreck Landing.

Rental cars - on STJ we rented from Conrad Sutton 10 of 14 trips with great results. He treats every vehicle like his, because they are. We've changed to renting from Dependable on STT and taking the car barge for reasons of convenience.

Have fun!

Cheers, RickG

Hey thanks, the 24/7 and 12 yr. old scratch was added emphasis on the point I was trying to make. Just looking for a comfortably numb experience.
Rick thanks for the info. We will be staying in Cruz Bay area.
Again thanks

I was there the second week of August last year and quiet a few places were closed. I guess the best advice is to not get your hopes up about any particular place, just figure it all out on island.

Comfortably numb......There is a possibility that I can relate to that 🙂

Cruz Bay- Quiet Mon and the Beach Bar are perfect spots

Woody's for happy hour can be fun if you don't mind sitting on the street. Gecko Gazebo in Mongoose can be a riot if Tyler is bartending. (WARNING- Tyler is not for the uptight or narrow minded)

On the subject of car rental....
We rented from Courtesy while we were down there in October. They were great until we dropped our vehicle back off when we were ready to leave. They said there was a spot on the front bumper that was not there when we picked it up. I believe it was there when we rented it, but then again there was so many dings, bumps, rust spots and scratches all over the vehicle who could tell. When we did our first inspection I kept pointing them all out and he said it was fine and didn't write it down. I did not buy their rental insurance since it was covered on my own insurance policy. When the guy started complaining about it when we dropped off the vehicle , I whipped out my camera and took pictures of it and by the time my plane landed at home, they had called and said it was fine. My insurance company said they would fight them on it if it came to it, but it never did. Whatever it was it would have buffed out very easily. You can't even see it on my pictures. Just keep that in mind. I wonder if they do that to everyone that does not buy their extra insurance. I loved their location since it was so convenient, but it left a bad taste in my mouth how the trip ended with them. I may or may not rent from them again.
