great site guys. I've taken June 4-9 off from work and am headed to St Thomas by myself. Deciding on a place to stay is like buying a flat panel TV; the more I research the more uncertain I am. I'm more interested in a safe, clean place to stay then great views and amenities. With that being said I'm not on a budget, so if it takes $250/night than thats OK, I'd just rather spend my money on activities than an expensive hotel room. I'm searching Orbitz, Expedia and Travelocity, and they all return the same group of resort hotels. Are there any nice, clean studio condos out there for a single guy, or do you guys recommend one of the main resorts like wyndham or frenchman's reef? Thanks.

If I were traveling alone to STT I would look at a place like the Crystal Palace. Great B&B, right in town. That would also give you a chance to meet other travelers. Google Crystal Palace. I know there are other like places.

Check out vrbo.com and you might find a nice place. We're finishing a week at Hull Bay Cottages on the north side. Clean, quiet and pretty budget friendly, too. They have two cottages and two apartments, along with a small pool and great views about halfway up the mountainside.

Go to vrbo.com and look under east end on st thomas. This is your best bet. I would say Sapphire on the hill, Rita from Condo Del Mar as she is very nice, not expensive and very clean. Sapphire is very close to the town of Red Hook (1mi if that), but only has one resturant. Pt. Pleasent is farther from Red Hook but has I think 2 places to eat and drink but you will be further away from town. It's nice (the grounds) better than Sapphire. The beach is ok, not as good as Sapphire but ok. I would not recommend staying anywhere in Charlotte A especially if you like to go out drinking. Roaming around downtown at night alone is not a great idea, especially if you're unsure about where you are going. You would be better off going out in the Red Hook area. Good luck, Leticia

Point Pleasant is nice (it's next door to the Wyndham, but a lot quieter and has great views), Mafolie is also great, if you want something closer to town, and Bellavista Bed and Breakfast would probably be my choice out of the three. Wendy Snodgrass, the proprieter, is great to deal with and the views are outstanding (this is closer to town, as well).

Beware not to confuse the Bellavista B&B with the Bellavista Scott Hotel, which is in a rough area (particularly after dark).

i truly appreciate everyone's advice. I'm at work so I can't type long. How does vrbo.com work? Some places are hilighted and some aren't. Are the hilighted ones the units that are available for rent? Is the transaction purely between myself and the owner, or is there a rental agency?

Leticia - Is there some way for me to refernce the exact units that you are referring to?
flyrchic - did you stay in a condo from vrbo.com, or did you stay in a hotel room?

Is renting a condo generally a better option than getting a room in a resort for a guy going solo for 5 days? I guess the benefit of a resort is a concierge desk to help me book my activities, or is that pretty easy to do on my own?

Thanks....Scott

On VRBO, I don't believe hi-lighting means anything.
You have to go into each one to check it's availability.
You can sort the page by bedrooms so you can have all the studios/one berooms at the top.

Also, on vrbo you will likely deal direct with the owners, or sometimes their rental agent. You can easily book your own activities from recommendations on this board. Whether a resort or a condo is right for you, well... depends on what you really want. We wanted more room and a way to prepare some of our own meals (breakfast, at least), plus we wanted peace & quiet, so Hull Bay Cottages gave us exactly what we wanted. Since we had rain nearly 3 days on this trip, I was glad to have the space.

I belive with most of the vrbo condos it's the owners you are dealing with. I don't know what kind of things you are looking to do ( booze 'n' beach or climbing a mountain to a sugar mill) but there are quite a few boats that take large groups on sailing trips right out of Sapphire's marina. Some of the same boats also go out for dinner sails. What are you into? You can plan your trip right here. Lots of threads on what to do. Happy to help, Leticia

Hi everyone,
I'm getting several qoutes for 1 BR condos at Sapphire Village and Point Pleasant. I'm leaning towards renting a condo rather than staying at a resort. I also like the idea of having a kitchen and being able to make breakfast and dinner. I guess I can take taxis into Red Hook for some nightlife.

Leticia - i'm not a big partier, but I like a little nightlife on occasion. I'm planning to spend a few days just relaxing and the rest exploring and doing activities. I'd love to take snorkeling lessons, maybe take a kayak trip, and a sailboat trip. Is it easy for a guy going solo to join a group and do these activities? I don't want to get lost or drown. 🙂

We had a studio at Point Pleasant and we liked it. Loved having Agave and Funji's on site, and we loved that we could walk to Coki, or the Wyndham.

Gari Ann - Do you remember the exact unit that you stayed at? I'm making some inquiries on condos listed on vrbo.com.

Yes it is very easy to get on something like new horizons day sail . There will be lots of others for you to mingle with. I think you would do well to talk to one of the locals (bartender, waitresses). They can point you in the right direction. Have fun.
