Has anyone shopped at "Pueblo" supermarket in St Thomas??
I understand it is a large chaine originating from Puerto Rico
sounds like a US equivalent of an Acme, or Kroger large chain.
How are the prices, and food selections????
Hi Jerseyfresh.
There are two Pueblos on STT, one by Subbase and the other by Havensight. The Pueblos have a good size frozen food section and decent prices (for STT) on staples like pasta, rice, etc. They are not like an Acme or a Kroger in that the produce has blemishes and many of the products they stock are from South America so brands and labels will be unfamiliar. Prices for food on island are high relative to most places stateside and the selection is different from the states as well but if you're flexible about your needs you'll be fine. By flexible I mean, for example, that they usually have bread but they may not have the type of bread you'd prefer.
Another popular grocery store is Plaza Extra in Tutu Park Mall (where big KMart is). Pretty much same description as Pueblo, but Plaza Extra also has an Indian food section with lots of those Indian MREs (for lack of a better description!) and other Indian food items.
I totally disagree about your dcription about Peublo not being like Kroger or Acme. The majority of Pueblo's supply comew from Miami and not South America. Yes there produce may have some blemish because the majority of it is imported, but as far as their selection the majority of it is the major american brands with brands that are probable made locally in Puerto Rica. Who imports food supply from South America? Answer All Major american supermarkets import their winter vegetables and fruits from Chile. Pueblo falls under the same USDA guidelines as any Major American super market chain.
