Visiting St. Thomas for the first time in last week of April and being an avid boater I would like to rent a small center console to explore around the island, maybe make the trip of Jost Van Dyke to Foxy's. Interesting in advice on my thoughts and help in finding the best deal on a small boat. Appreciate all and any help...

Hi
You might try Capt. Dan Rue at Pocket Yachts based at the Sapphire Beach Marina -I think he has ProLine center consoles in various sizes from 17" and up. Have not rented boats but have rented condos from him with great success. I was just there about a month ago and saw his fleet. Here's the link.

Thanks for the help! If anyone else out there has ever rented a small boat in St. Thomas I'd love to hear about your experiences. What to do and WHAT NOT TO DO...

All the best!.

I have over the last few years, rented boats from Nauti-Nymph, Ocean Runners, Awesome Power Boats, and Pocket Yachts. We have had good experiences with all of them. There is usually a few items, like stereos, radios, etc that don't work but all have been mechanically sound. A couple of things to consider is the size of boat if you are going to Jost. Also most companies have tightened down on experience necessary to bareboat. So I would make some calls and make sure you can do what you want. Also availability has been an issue so you will want a reservation.

Jay, thanks for the thoughts. The trip to Jost is how far from Red Hook or Saphire Beach?

In a power boat it can be covered in thirty minute to an hour, I don't have a chart here but I would say ten to twelve miles. It is line of sight nav and on most days that you would want to make the trip you can see Jost from St Thomas. Also don't discount some time on the North Shore of St John as you go over. The trip isn't difficult from a navigation standpoint. Like I said before though it will depend on your near coastal experience as to weather or not any of the companies will let you go on your own. Also consider if you want to drink. Jost is a mecca for that. If you plan to party hire a captain for the day. Even with the experience I have here I am not pround to ride a crewed boat. We just did this a couple of weeks ago for a friends 40th birthday, we knew it would be a large day and better to let someone else handle helm. He or she will let you run the boat, but once the painkillers start flowing it up to them to get you out alive.

Jay, much thanks. I like you're thinking on the hired crew. I am a U.S.C.G. Captain, own a boat rental company but much cock-tailing may indeed happen.

I think I'm going to rent a 20' center console and cruise around St. Thomas for at least a half day. Sight seeing, snorkeling etc... Is there any places that are off limits? Bad areas? Locals only?

Best,
Capt. C.

We tried Pocket Yachts and it was not a good experience.
I'd not recommend them.(td)

execubob, could you elaborate? Was the boat you rented not well maintained? Was the service poor? How did PocketYachts not meet your expectations? It's helpful for both the business and the board audience to understand where the company fell short.
