Hi StJohn4Ever!

To get the lowest price on Spirit Airlines you have to be a member of their $9.00 Fare Club. It's cost 34.99 for an entire year. This club give you the benefits of the lowest fares and discounts on baggage fees. Right now, depending on your dates, you could get a rate of $32.99 One Way to St. Thomas. Also depends on where you are flying from.

I hope this helps you out! 🙂
Cheers

You are so very welcome! The $9.00 fare club is good for a year from the day you purchase it. So...if you see a great fare and want to travel, buy it then and get the great deal. 🙂 I really haven't seen any pattern to one day being better then the next. They will also send you emails on upcoming dates for trips with great discounts. If you have any more questions...ask away. I have a great friend that works for Spirit and I travel with them all the time.

Beware.....starting in August Spirit is charging $45. for a carry on bag (That's $90. round trip). Also, $25 - $35 for checked bags (each way). Then there's the $15, $10, $5 to "Pre-reserve" your seat. Additionally, there's an $8 fee (each way) to reserve your flight on-line ($10 if by phone). Did you want some water on board?....that's $2.

Their $9 Club costs $39.95/year.....they will continue to charge your credit card each year whether you want to be a member or not (for me the credit card company changed my card number to stop the changes).

And the $9 fare club doesn't always get you the best fare for the time you want it.......try playing with their system and see if you can get the special fare "both ways". By the way the $9 fare club is a little misleading....it doesn't mean you get a $9 fare.

Your best bet is to check several airlines....add in all the "extra" fees and see which one is the most convenient at the best price.

you can do way better than Spirit, just check around, I saw their CEO on TV the other day, suggesting that when folks fly there really is no need for luggage, not sure how that would all work out.

I have found that when you add their fees they are not the cheapest. And then if you need to connect from one airline (say for Newark to STT you need to go through FLL) you will discover that Continental does NOT have a baggage agreement with Spirit. So you need to get your bags and carry them to the Spirit terminal.

I have flown them several times and have not had problems but I was in the FLL area. As far as the 9 dollar deal it is a rip off. If you fly once a year you probably will not save much. As far as how to navigate their web site it is simple as just looking out every day until you get a deal. Also I have found the price to be great one way then when you come back it is big bucks. But if you live in FLL or Orlando or Tampa it may be a good deal.

The Spirit Air strike cost me ~$1400 (for 2 one-way tix on Delta to get home) on top of already costly flights - so I will never fly with them again even if they are the cheapest. It was next to impossible to try and get my refund back from them (finally got thru after a 40-min wait on hold after 3 attempts). They would only refund 50% of my fare since 'officially' they were still running the flight (strike ended one day before the flight) - although when we arrived at STT there was no one to speak to and no one to assure the flight was still scheduled.

Also - be aware that after you purchase the flight (paid) - you will then have to pay for baggage, overhead carry-on (after Aug1) and even your seat (like selling a car without a sterring wheel) unless you want a random seat assignment (or get booted to being oversold) - so that also adds substaintial cost to the flight and hassle. I'll stick with AA or Delta for ~$200 more.

I am not a big fan of AA or Delta - but f**k Spirit Air... stay away - and tell everyone else you can.

Anyone considering flying Spirit Airlines should look online at their reviews prior to booking. They constantly cancel and delay flights. I got stuck in Ft. Lauderdale and had to purchase two nights hotel accommodations due to Spirits lack of reliability. Was flying from St. Thomas to FLL. They told us all flights in FLL were cancelled due to weather. Numerous people pulled up weather and all skies were clear for all connections. Our flight from St. Thomas landed at the exact time our connecting flight to Atlanta took off. If there were weather problems, the flight would not have taken off. Of course, they offer nothing to compensate for the 2 nights I had to stay in FLL because they couldn't get me on another flight. They only have 2 daily flights out of FLL to ATL!!!!!

They lost our bags on the way down, we got them the next day but had to go back to the airport to pick them up. On the return flight same thing happened but were not returned for 2 weeks but delivered to our house. I never did speak to anyone when I tried calling customer service numerous times. I even sent a certified letter while our baggage was still missing but never received a response. I wrote about this at length over 2 years ago.

We will be flying down again in 3 weeks via American Airlines from Chicago. AA had tickets for the same price as Spirit. Although I have had issues with American they always rectified the situation. The last time that we flew down our flight was late arriving for our connection in Puerto Rico. American Airlines provided us accomodations for the night as well as vouchers for dinner and the following days breakfast.

Don't forget to add the fee for "carry on" luggage to your ticket with Spirit. Anything that will not fit under the seat in front of you and needs to go in the overhead bin has a charge now.
