Hubby and I were on St. Croix May 15-22nd and had a blast. Having been to St. Croix many times and almost always staying on the east side, we decided to stay west this time and only frequent west end restaurants, stores, etc. We stayed at Macs Beach House in Fredericksted. The property was right on the beach, very affordable and the owners, Maxy and Cy, were very hospitable. Sunset Jazz was the Friday after our arrival and was extremely enjoyable. Also enjoyed the Carribean Musuem Exhibits and the whole vibe of the evening. Though we did a lot of cooking we also ate out. We had breakfast most mornings at the Fredericksted hotel. Good food and very reasonable. We enjoyed a wonderful Sunday brunch at Aqua West. We were the only folks there, and they had all we could drink free champagne. Mimosas were $1.50. Needless to say we skipped the OJ. The location and view was spectacular. We also ate at Turtles Deli. Wonderful sandwiches big enough to split between two people. Our only excursion mid island was to the LaReine Chicken shack. After a night of serious imbibing, we needed something to "stick to our ribs." The chicken and seasoned rice and beans soaked up some of that rum. LOL!!! We also bought some fresh lobsters from some of the fisherman over that way also. I don't understand how St Croix closed the fisherman's market which they claimed didn't have running water, but they allow loads of fisherman selling items in front of the market out of the back of their trucks, coolers etc. Go figure. At any rates, the lobsters were very good eating. All in all it was a very relaxing time. Lots of beach time, just doing nothing. It's cooler over on that side and they seem to get more rain. It rained mostly at night however. Can't wait to get back.

I'm glad your trip went so well. We have a tendancy to not head west as much as we should. Those were some good suggestions that we'll have to try!

Did you have any sand from Africa in the atmosphere during your stay?

Not to my knowledge. It was very hot though as I've never been down in May. I have asthma and would have probably noticed a change in my respiratory functions. I never felt better. However, as soon as I got off the plane in Baltimore, I instantly reached for my inhaler.

Hi jewelygirl,
Our visit overlapped part of yours. We stayed at Sand Castles south of F'sted may 10 - 18th. We also enjoyed the Sunset Jazz. It was the first one we were able to catch. You might be in one of the pictures I took that night, a lot of crowd shots. Wasn't the sunset great that night? I got some shots of the sun as it just touched the water, peeking out from behind a grey cloud with the pier to the right and a small boat on the south side(left) of the pier. We also went to Aqua West that night while the music was still playing. Everything was fine until a big ol' bat swooped in and flew around a few times before exiting. Kind of like Sammy the sting ray out at Buck Island when she was alive. Mama Bear hates bats like Indiana Jones hates snakes. Oh yeah, the food was very good there. Did you get to St Tropes or Blue Moon? Both are unexpected treats in F'sted. If you had a car I hope you drove up Mahogany Drive to see Norma at the Domino Club. I've met some interesting people there, including Wave before Tan Tan tours took off.
There's a lot to be said for the west side. I'm trying to figure out how to get back there this Nov.

Kasmor,
It was actually Sahara dust. It made the view hazy. I saw it on the 10th when we arrived but after a few days it was gone. Or at least I didn't notice it any more.

Hey Bassman. We didn't make it up to Norma's this trip but have been there several times. I love that place. We did go to blue moon for some cold frosty beverages. Didn't eat there though this time but have in the past. We decided that we can't keep going down for vacation because it's just too hard when we leave. We've made a pact that the next time we are down, we are there for good, or at least for the winter season.

Just thought I'd chime in on the LaReine Chicken shack. This is the islands best chicken, most people who live here rave about it. We try to get "take-out" once a week or so because the whole family loves "the Chicken Shack". We discovered the other day there is an old blues song called Chicken Shack... maybe it's where they got the name! If anyone is interested in more info I'll do a blog post over at www.cruzana.com

Yeah, that chicken is good. They had a full menu - pork chops and other stuff but I always get the chicken. I forgot to mention that we had pizza at Napolean's Pizza in Fredericksted. Very good. I've heard raves about Lost Dog but Napoleans was fantastic. I met the owner who is a New Yorker. Huge slizes and I thought reasonable.
