Most times when I'm using my camera I'm at the beach or on a boat. I was always constantly worried about getting my camera wet, or getting sand in it. So, I took to buying disposable underwater cameras, but the quality wasn't great. I recently purchased the olympus stylus 770 digital camera. It's 7.1 megapixels, waterproof to 33 feet, and shockproof to 5 feet. It comes with a warranty( 1 year), and and you can also buy an additional warranty when you buy it. It's a great camera. You don't need one of those waterproof cases for it, just soak it in freshwater sometime after use. I love it! You can find one for around $350. I purchased mine at boolchands. The camera has a bunch of settings, including underwater wide and underwater macro. It also has settings for sunsets, fireworks, etc..sorry to sound like a saleman, but I love it! And its very affordable...

Someone on one of the VI forums bought one and is heading to STJ with it shortly. I have the Pentax Optio W20 which is waterproof to 5 feet and shockproof. It worked great for snorkeling. Pictures are here...

The pictures with file names beginning with IMGPxxxx. The other pictures (beginning with IMG_xxxx were taken with a Canon Powershot S50 with an underwater housing.

wow that IS affordable! I paid $100 more for a camera with 7.2 megapixels, and its definitely not water proof! Of course, that was 6 months ago, and prices are always going down on stuff like that, but still, I wish I had done more research before buying. heading down next week, and I guess I'll just be using a $9.99 disposable underwater camera for the snorkeling shots. 🙂

What are the zooms on the Olympus & Pentex cameras you two are talking about?

Hi vislander THANKS for the advise I picked one up for Mrs. Nyestreet's bday (4/19) today. Including 300 photo memory card and case and tax was around $400. Shopping for the girl that wants nothing is tough. I was jealous of Ron-L's photo taking and posting abilities, hopefully by next year I can post a photo of me and my hottie girlfriend , swimming w/ sea turtles in Francis Bay. (will be pming you Ron for instructions;) )

Sorry to say...I just got back from STJ and bought me that new camera before we left...I HATED IT !!! I found it impossible to see the screen underwater. It was like looking at a black screen! The buttons were teeny tiny. I don't know... I am pretty much computer/camera/electronically challenged... I wish I had bought a new Canon and underwater housing. Just my opinion.

Mrs. Nyestreet is my hottie girlfriend and I'm sure she'll make me teach her how to use the camera.

the olympus 770 is a 3.0 optical zoom. I can't see that great with it underwater, but, well, you are underwater. When I download my pics they are amazing, however!
