We'll be on St John the last week in January (2 weeks on St John and one week on Jost). Although we don't want to be working on vacation my husband needs to stay in touch w/ his employees. Our cell phones work on St. John but depending on where we are sometimes we hit the BVI towers and it gets very expensive. Is it possible to purchase a Trac phone or something similiar on St. John to use while there? If so does anyone have recommendations on where to purchase? Does anyone know if that phone would also work on Jost? Thanks for the info. Jill

I used the Tracfone I brought with me and 00802 also pops up as valid if you want to buy a phone or check service. I didn't pay attention to if it was using BVI towers and didn't go to Jost.

having never used a trac phone I wasn't sure if one purchased here in Vermont would work on the island....or if I needed to purchase one on the island to get the local towers.... still working on this one! Any other insight would be great

Two years ago our nationwide plan with USCellular was only like $3.50 a day plus minimal charges- this year the bill on just my husband's phone was $111.00! Made stupid questions reallly dumb now!!! That was just answering it on St. John's not the BVI so hope someone comes up to an answer as we will definitely need to do something different next year. I'm just glad I didn't answer mine.

AT&T has excellent coverage in the USVI for their pre-paid go-phones.

Thanks for the info Margy, do you know if you have to buy the phone on the island to get the coverage and avoid roaming fees? Haven't never used a disposable phone I'm in unchartered territory and just trying to make this work. I'm assuming you'd have to buy it on the island to get their service which is fine just trying to figure it out.

Any info would be helpful from anyone that has knowledge of these disposable phones w/ prepaid minutes.

Thank you!

Last year we stayed in coral bay and used a trac phone. We had reception in many places. I believe we were only charged one unit per minute,Roaming is 2 units per minute. This phone was bought in NH and had a NH number. We actually bought it at Family Dollar for real cheap and it served it's purpose. It was a bare bones phone (no pic taking or internet access) but we really only wanted it for phone calls.

Jill we will also be on STJ from 1/21 until 2/6, maybe our paths will cross.

thanks for the info, so one would assume based on your experience that the phone doesn't have to be purchased on St John. We have a our regular phones where we've upgraded the text/e-mail service for the time we are gone but my husband needs to make business calls and last year the calls cost our company over $500.00 for the roaming so we were looking for a cheaper route for actual phone calls. the texting and e-mail upgrade on our phone is only $20. for the time we are gone then we cancel when we return.

I appreciate all the help

Jill

Good evening everyone! We are so excited to be returning to St John after so many years. We have a little more time to wait. We will be arriving in March for a month. I am also wondering about service in STJ on our tracphones. Looked at tracphone's web site and after reading all about their new international long distance service it was still totally unclear if US VI was included in the US coverage or not. The coverage map shows Puerto Rico, but does not show US VI. Sounds as though the person you spoke to was unsure as well. Seems silly to pack phones/chargers, etc. if they won't work, and/ or afraid to use them for the costs. Maybe it's just me, but is it really so difficult for companies to just spell it out ? lol I guess that would be the point, making it difficult..... ha

(We had Verizon and went to Mexico for 5 months, were told by Verizon customer service that we could use our phone with the plan we purchased just for that purpose. When we got back to the US we were greeted by a nearly $700 bill. We barely used the phone and rarely were we connected longer than a few moments. There was no way to prove the information we got from the rep, even with name, time, day. They just informed us that we were roaming and we should know the cost. Friends had the same plan and did not have charges for their roaming while in Mexico.)

Soooo, we are a little bit wary. Long winded way of saying I haven't found any answer as yet either. But, Hey, we are so very lucky to be seeing the beautiful islands again! Thanks to all who post. It is so helpful!! 1girl
