It depends on which island. You can fly from the mainland (US) to either St. Croix or St. Thomas non-stop depending on the airline and your port of departure. But to get to St. John, you have to fly in to St.Thomas and take the ferry over to Cruz Bay.... 20-45 minutes depending on where you get it from.... Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie.

We travel as a family (wife and I + 2 and 4 year old) to St.Thomas and nothing beats non-stop.

Hello,

Under General Guide in the top navigation there is a sub topic 'Getting Here' with information on getting to the USVI. You have two options for getting here, take a cruise that stops here for a day. Or for a land based vacation take a flight to St. Thomas' airport if you want to visit St. Thomas or St. John or Water Island (St. John and Water Island you continue to by ferry). Or to visit St. Croix take a flight to St. Croix's airport.

That section I mentioned has a list of airlines that fly here and approimate times for flights.
