My family and I are going to St John and will be bringing our 6 month old. I am nervous about what to bring for him, the taxis, bugs etc. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Jaime

Hi JamieD,

No worries -- you'll do fine! Always keep in mind that you can go to the grocery store to get forgotten items as necessary.

Be sure to take bug spray - I find that only the kind with a significant amount of DEET works. I don't know if that's supposed to be safe for a baby. Here's a link to a mosquito net that fits over a stroller:

The no-seeums can really be an itchy problem and could make a baby very uncomfortable, so you'll just want to be pro-active about preventing bites. And, of course, you literally will not see them until after they bite.

I personally prefer to rent a Jeep when bringing a child of any age. Our son is 6 and it's still nice to have the freedom to take extras along to the beach -- we leave many things in the vehicle so as to have them on hand if we need them, but we don't have to tote them around everywhere. There is so much to see and do - you'll get your money's worth from the Jeep rental and enable yourself to experience a lot more of the island.

Maho and Hawksnest are nice beaches with easy access--you don't have to walk far with your gear.

I'm sure others will have many more great tips for you. Good luck and have a super trip! 🙂

Hi,
I read a thread on another site: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1 A Plea For Toddler Travel Suggestions....you may have to copy and paste. I realize your little one isn't a toddler, but you may find some helpful tips.
Good luck....mia

If you have a front pack or back pack carrier, bring it! If you don't own either type of carrier, ask around to see if a friend has one you can borrow. We used our back pack carrier every day while on STJ and only used the stroller a few times. And don't forget a hat for the little one to wear while out in the sun.

Jaime, the most important thing is to make sure you have purchased a seat on the airplane and put him in a car seat. Don't count that there will be an empty seat for you to place him in!

Thank you all for your help!! I really appreciate it! And, I did buy a seat for the baby. I figured it would be easier with him having his own seat and with my luck there wouldn't be an empty one! (though the flights that I have been on the STT generally aren't full.....I didn't want to chance it)

Anyway, thanks again!
