The USVI are VERY easy to get married! (Not to mention beautiful!!) No residency period and no blood tests! And after receiving the marriage license following the ceremony (about two weeks), absolutely no problem obtaining new Social Security card, driver's license, or passport.

As I understand it (from my own wedding on St John)...

- no bloodwork
- must have paperwork submitted at least 8 business days prior (including a divorce decree or death certificate if previously married) as well as license fee
- must be "sworn in" at courthouse prior to wedding and have valid photo ID with you (which can be "the day of" like many cruiseship passengers do)

We actually sent our paperwork in about 5 months prior to the wedding, were sworn in about 4 months prior while there on land vacation, and returned on a cruise to marry. Because we were sworn in more than 3 months prior, the license could not be 'issued' at that time, so our minister just picked it up within the 3-month timeframe. That way, when returning on the cruise with our families/friends, we were able to go straight from cruiseship to wedding beach. 🙂 As we learned, you could send your paperwork to the courthouse up to 12 months prior, be sworn in any time after the 8-day waiting period (after receiving your check/paperwork), and could be issued the marriage license within three months of the wedding date. Our wedding was in March 2003, so I don't know if much has changed.

Of course, initially, when we asked the cruiseline's wedding coordinator company if we could be sworn in during our November trip and marry during our March cruise, they told us that was NOT legal. So I picked up the phone, called the nice ladies at the courthouse, and asked. Of course it was legal... so we ended up using a local wedding coordinator while on the cruise as opposed to the cruiseline's wedding coordinator company. Worked out just fine!!

Long story short... tell your friend she should do it!!!

I was just married in St Thomas in June. We had sent off for your license months prior to our trip. We were to go get sworn in and such on a Wed. and to be married on a Friday. Our plane was major delayed so we ended up going on that Thursday to the court house. We were sworn in and then made aware that we didn't send enough money for the license. We simply went down stairs to the clerk's office and paid the balance. The women in the clerk's office there are NUTS!!!! They were sooo funny. Happy islanders...I'd say. We had no problems either. Good luck!!!
