My husband and I were scheduled to come to STJ on Sat. Oct. 9th. We were phoned last night and were told our reservations had to be cancelled due to flooding, lack of drinking water. Any insights would be helpful.

We too are scheduled to arrive next week (St Thomas 15 & 16 then Westin 17-24). They called last night saying they were cancelling us but when I called they said it's up to us. So now the dilema. We LOVE St. John and don't want to go to any other resort they might offer. Changing airfares will be a nightmare at this late date and without trip insurance. They did tell me there was a meeting today and the water is okay to drink from the tap. they said the pool is scheduled to be re-opened on the 13th. Tennis courts, done indefinitely, snorkels indefinitely. Deli is open and "high restaurant" open (that's what she said "High restaurant"). So, what to do? Was looking at VRBO and thinking of renting something there and taking Starwood points from Westin. What do you think people? What's everyone doing.

boodles: right now the water is unfit for swimming and snorkeling because of run-off contamination but this usually clears up within a couple of days and the water-testing people are ready to get out there as soon as possible to make sure everything is back to normal. It's lovely today, great drying weather and all the islands are in major clean-up mode. I wouldn't worry about it - just stock up on sunscreen and insect repellant!

thank you so much. any further input is most appreciated. we are pretty nervous about keeping our reservations. feels more assuring to hear from someone who is there.

Hi everyone! My husband and I are going to the Westin on the 13th thru the 23rd. First we canceled, then we talked to Starwood and decided to go for it. They said the clean up is going better than anticipated so we are hopeful. I think the only timeshares that are damaged are the pool villas. We are up on the hillside. As long as the other beaches are okay, we will just rent a car and use them!

Oh by the way....Snorkels is the name of one of the Westin's restaurants - which is on the beach - that all got damage.

So, what's the latest on the beaches and ocean now? We leave for St John Saturday and I want to be mentally prepared if we have to avoid the water.
