In a couple of weeks, my husband and I will be visiting St. John for the first time to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We don't want to miss anything. We will be staying for a week. How is the weather?? Has it rained more than usual??

The weather will be fine. There may be a shower or two, but it won't interfere with your time there. Don't worry about missing anything. Rent a vehicle, travel around the island, snorkel at different beaches, eat at different restaurants. Take plenty of time to do very little. Sit, float, nap. Watch the night sky, listen to the waves, frogs, roosters, donkeys. Just savor it all. Do one of the hikes. Buy one of the guidebooks and explore the island. I put my watch away and don't watch television or movies. I don't bring my cellphone or laptop. Great place to spend an anniversary. Congrats. 30 years together with another person is a wonderful thing.

As for snorkeling equipment, can it be rented for the week, or do you rent at each beach? Any suggestions as to places to rent from??

Congrats on #30. We plan to celebrate the same anniversary this Nov in STJ, our 4th trip and we can't wait! I agree with Nick on everything. Its a slow moving island so you couldn't hurry if you tried which makes it all the more special. Its small enough that you'll get to see quite a bit while you're there. We bought our own masks, snorkle, and fins to bring as we fell in love with snorkling during our first STJ visit. Check with your hotel to see if they have equipment. You can easily rent for the week which you should do as the possibilities are endless and the price by the week is cheaper. See what the other message boarders recommend but I recommend buying and bringing your own-this way you have a good mask fit which is important. I can't swim well so I plan to buy a snorkle vest back home and will pack that too this year.

You have a lot of options. You can buy an inexpensive set of snorkel gear before you go or rent there. Several beaches do rent gear, but you'll do better renting for a week. Could try Cruz Bay Watersports in Cruz Bay or Crabby's in Coral Bay. Some people are uncomfortable with the thought of using a snorkel that someone else has had in their mouth, but they are disinfected and sterilized. You may consider a daysail, but it's not necessary just to snorkel. One of the great features of STJ is how much good snorkeling there is right off the beaches.

Hello Rebel,

I agree that you might want to pick up a guidebook like Feet, Fins & Four Wheel Drive. Lots of great information on enjoying your vacation on St. John. You can read about it/order it at http://www.vitraders.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=21-02&Category_Code=gub.

On St. John, definately don't miss out on snorkeling, visit Annaberg and Cinnamon Bay ruins, spend some time enjoying the beaches like Caneel Bay, Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay, spend some time browsing the unique shops in Cruz Bay and just relax.

You can rent a snorkel set from the Cruz Bay Dive shop for the week or a few days. Only a few beaches have snorkel rentals on the beach itself so you'd want to have either your own set or a rental if you wanted to snorkel at say Salt Pond Bay or Waterlemon where there aren't on site rentals.

Have a great time.

Good afternoon rebel--congratualtions on 30 years. We have been to St John three times for anniversaries 29-30 and 31 and are planning another trip for this next year. You will find a beautiful and relaxing island with many nice people. Do the Reef Bay Trail Hike. It is all down hill and you boat back to cruz bay. It is thru the natl park. Explore the island. We also did a rental to the Virgin Gorda Baths this last year and had a good time. It is pricey but worth it. Use past postings on this site for good companies.
