I have been to St Thomas before, but am planning to bring a laptop this trip (October). Where are there internet cafes and what do they charge? I seem to remember there being one in Havensight, next to Hooters. Also, has anyone come from the states and had good cell phone reception? If so, what provider? I have T-Mobile and couldn't get any signal. My friend had AT&T, but said she got hit with roaming charges when she got home.

I use ATT when I'm down and have never been charged roaming.

When I first got here I tried the internet cafe near Havensight and think that is where I got the virus from H#$L. There are free wifi spots at a number of local beach bars like Emerald Beach.

AT&T works great. Only get roaming charges when you get too close to BVIs (near STJ) and then you just call ATT and the remove them.

Turn off roaming when you're here and you won't have to deal with the charges. I have Sprint and I turn roaming on when I visit the states and have it off when I'm home.

dirtydeeds, I also have T-Mobile and had only spotty difficulty getting service. My friend, however, who has Verizon had dismal coverage. With T-Mobile, I had to wait until the word "Suncom" showed up on the screen, then I would have loads of bars. Suncom is in Puerto Rico, and T-Mobile has bought that company. Of course, I haven't been since last August. I'll be back in a few weeks and checking it out again. Call T-Mobile to verify. BTW, the USVI are in the calling area, so no roaming charges.

From those I have talked to about this, ATT is the top choice and Sprint the second.

I have an iPhone (AT&T) and get good phone & Internet service on STT....never a roaming fee.

I know that the Point Pleasant Resort & Sapphire Beach Resort have free wifi access in their lobbies. Other resorts may also have it.

We stayed at the Marriott condos- Frenchmans Cove and they had free internet. Then we moved to the Marriott Hotel- Frenchmens Reef and Morning Star, and they charged $14.95/ day!!!! Needless to say, we didn't use our computer in the room!!

I go to Picaso's Coffee shop in Smith Bay. A/C and nice quiet atmosphere to work.
