Hello all,

My daughters collect souvenir flattened/pressed pennies from spots we've visited. In case you've not seen these: little machine takes your 50 cents and a penny and flattens it out with a touristy scene on it. Usually places like Disney World, zoos, science/children's museums have some. My guess is we won't find this sort of thing on the islands, but thought I'd ask. We have found them in gift shops in touristy areas before. Maybe Coral World...but my plan is to skip this in favor of "real" coral world. 🙂 Anybody seen any of these machines on STT, STJ, Virgin Gorda, or Jost?

Thanks in advance!

Cmom...not only can you do (we've done it before), but if you can have somebody drill a hole in it, you can put it on your key chain which is pretty cool. They are really nice and I love mine.

It took us all week to find the penny machines! We went up to Mountain Top on our last morning and lo and behold - there they were. My spouse was so happy, as he collects them when we travel. That's about the best thing I can say about Mountain Top - the view was hazy at best and shopping isn't our "thing". I collect beach glass, but didn't find any during this trip; I guess you could say that's a good thing.

I'm not a big shopper either, but we were going to go up there to check the view anyway, so we'll grab some pennies while we are there.

Church of one,
Sorry to hear it was hazy at Mountain Top, it is the one place that I feel everyone should stop at as the view is to die for and they don't charge you to go in! You didn't find any beach glass at Hull Bay? I am surprized, I usually do pretty good there. Next time try Dorothea Beach, not good for swimming, but good for the glass. Too bad Coral World doesn't have the penny machines, they need to get one. We live here and still have had fun doing them now and again!

I'm always amazed at the different things folks collect. This is a new one I never knew existed.

Promoguy,

If you are interested... we got started collecting at Disney World. They have these machines everywhere. There are many unique designs (which can be tracked with a little guide if you reallyare into this...), and they even have books especially made for the pressed coins (you can do quarters at some locations, too). These make very affordable souvenirs, as the cost (and fun) is in finding the machines, not in spending lots of money an them (@ $0.51 each ususally for the pennies). They also don't take up lots of space back at home, and the kids don't out-grow them like T-Shirts. Looks like we won't be bringing back lots from this trip, but a few to represent the islands will be nice.

I love the penny machines! Wish I'd had known STT had some.

I collect beach glass, but didn't find any during this trip; I guess you could say that's a good thing.

I collect beach glass too...I found some on Pineapple Beach (next to Point Pleasant)..several colors: amber, green and clear. But yes, I guess that is good you didn't find any since it's technically litter. 😉

Where are some places you guys have collected pennies...outside of US or some place interesting? I've only collected them from Ft. Worth science museum and the zoo, St. Louis science and history museum, etc.

Beach glass is broken glass from bottles that gets tumbled in the water, against rocks, etc. It usually doesn't have sharp edges anymore and is pretty.

Very cool! My son has some from Disney, Grant's Farm and the Zoo (here in STL), Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and Field Museums. He will love to add to the collection! Thx for the tip!

Gari Ann,

SO far we have some from STT! (word of warning, Mtn. Top closes at 4:30pm at least some of the days...not sure of all hours), lots from Disney World, Orange Beach AL; Hawaii; Orlando Science Ctr; Memphis zoo, science museum, and children's museum; Nashville Zoo; San Francisco. Need some more!
