I am arriving in St. Thomas on Sunday, 6/13. I have a car rented and had planned to ferry it to St. Johns on a couple of occasions, but I just found out that the rental agency I resreved my car through will fine me $1,000 if it leaves the Island. Other agencies will allow the vehicle to leave St. Thomas for St. Johns. Obviously this particular agency is hell bent on keeping the cars on St. Thomas. What is the risk driving a car on St Johns? Can anyone fill me in? I know you do not know the rental agencies policies but would I be at any more risk with a car on St. Johns vs. St. Thomas?
Thanks
Eddie from Houston

I don't think the car ferry will take your car over. As far as risk goes, the problem is that they don't what to have to go get the car if you have trouble.

DSJ, Hertz is the agency who will not let you leave the Island with one of their vehicles. I have found several that will, but my concern was should I if Hertz is so strict, why? I have basically found out that these agencies provide no service on St. Johns and if you have one of their cars over there and have problems it is a pain in their butt to assist you, thus you are on your own.

Eddie,

I was in STT last week, and rented a very fun (rugged) Jeep from Budget, which is located in the airport. Budget does allow their cars to go to STJ. I was with friends who also rented a minivan from Budget, and that is actually the vehicle we took over to STJ. Interestingly, the car ferries we used (1 for the trip over, and a separate company for the trip back because we were in a hurry to get cruise ship passengers back) did not even check any paperwork. They just collected their fee for the trip, which was $35.00 round trip for the Boyson, Inc. ferry, and $25.00 round trip for the other ferry. The trip takes about 20 - 25 minutes. It was pretty simple really, and definitely worth it. STJ is THE most beautiful place I've ever been.

FYI, we ate at the Mongoose restaurant (not the exact name, but close enough), which was great. Service was friendly and quick, food wass good, and the frozen concoctions were awesome (try the Bushwacker!). Just don't sit next to the birds in the cage, as they can be really loud, especially when the chickens run under their cage!

Have fun!

Ansley

There is a Hertz RentalCompany in St. John, therefore the St. Thomas agency is only trying to protect their own. Generally they all say if you have a problem in St. John, you are on your own. The odds are with you that nothing short of a flat tire would happen. The barge services don't check to see where your car is from, they could care less!
