VI Emancipation Day

A local holiday celebrating the emancipation of slavery in the former Danish West Indies (today the USVI).

St. John Festival 2009
St. John, Franklin Powell Park 3:00pm
Event: Cultural Day, a wonderful event celebrating Emancipation and Virgin Islands culture. July 3rd is Emancipation in the USVI and for this a re-enactment is performed by people in the community. Traditional dancers will perform the VI dance quelbe. Local arts and crafts will be on sale. A museum with items from the old days like the 'goose' (iron that used coal for heat), coal pots (used in the past for cooking) and clothing will be some of the items on display. At dusk a flambo torch parade will proceed through Cruz Bay. Music throughout the afternoon.

Event: J'ouvert, One of the most popular events of Carnival. It is an early morning party as thousands of people dance through the streets behind their favorite bands while others stand on the sidelines and enjoying the music.

Event; Parade, The parade is one of the biggest events of the St. John Festival. It takes place in Cruz Bay and includes thousands of participants and thousands of viewers that line the parade route. Come see mocko jumbies, carnival royalty, listen to bands play while colorfully costumed troupes dance along. Some troupes include masqueraders wearing from the smallest costumes of bikinis with beads to elaborate, large costumes that stretch the width of the parade route. The parade route starts at the National Park Visitor Center entrance and runs through Cruz Bay.

21st Annual Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament
St. Thomas, Hull Bay Hideaway
It's time to fish! It's time to party! It's time to celebrate! The Northside Sportfishing Club's Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament - set for Sunday July 12th at Hull Bay Hideaway - is your chance to catch that 'big one' while enjoying the camaraderie of family and friends. This inshore fishing event offers more ways to win and more cash and luxury gift prizes than any other Virgin Islands-based tournament of its kind. In addition to fishing fun for anglers, there's a live band and beach party in the afternoon along with special shore side activities and games anyone in the community will enjoy. Plus, proceeds from the event benefit charitable community organizations Come one, come all - men, women, boys and girls - anglers of all skill levels are invited to enter, and everyone comes away a winner. Like in previous years they expect more than 300 anglers! There will be drink, food and live music throughout the afternoon for community spectators who come down to see the catch and catch the fun for the day. A local holiday marked with prayer that the upcoming active months of Hurricane Season do not bring destruction to the islands. Atlantic Hurricane Season is from June 1st to November 30th.
