Sapphire Beach Resort Condominiums

December 29, 2014 07:32PM

We are finishing our trip to St John with 3 nights on St Thomas. We did this about 10 years ago and stayed at Secret Harvour Villas. We loved Secret Harbour. Its looking like those are not available on our June dates this year and we are considering Sapphire Beach Resort Condos. Our requirements are good snorkeling, nice beach, decent rooms and not too crazy crowded. Will we be disappointed with Sapphire Beach? Is it going to be too crowded? Are there other beaches/resorts we should consider. Trying to keep the cost down somewhat which is why we are not going to consider the Secret Harbour Beach resort.
Thanks

Depends on the room as some at SBR privately owned but rented thru hotel but June is pretty quiet as off season. The hotel and condos are different entities.

You can stay there and drive over to Secret Harbor, if you choose.
Sapphire is a lovely beach tho. Not sure what amenities they have these days as there has been conflict between resort owners and condo associations so last I heard no beach lounge chairs, snorkel rental or bar/restaurant/bathrooms on beach for hotel.

Maybe someone else can update you on conditions.

The dive shop reopened at Sapphire some time ago, there are chair rentals, the Banana Cabana on the beach is serving up drinks and sandwiches while the Sapphire Bar and Grille up on the hill in Sapphire Village is open as usual - and they now have a small convenience store within the restaurant. Cruise ship visitors coming for the day have never created huge crowds. June is in slow season and best prices are to be found in Sapphire Village. Hop onto www.vrbo.com and deal directly with an owner. You won't be disappointed at all!

If you stay at SBRM beach loungers are provided for guest and owner use. If you stay at Sapphire Village you must rent them from the dive shop. The last time we were there the dive shop was only open on cruise ship days.

ALL of the condos at Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina are privately owned.

There are a number of different property managers.

There really isn't a hotel unless you would consider it a condo hotel. Rentals are available through the property managers but the majority of the units rent on VRBO.com so you deal directly with an owner. The units are not standardized as each owner is individually responsible for their condos so dealing with an owner allows you to see what you will be getting.

Have you considered the Point Pleasant Resort?

We have a hotel program. Each Villa (condo) is privately owned, but many owners participate in the hotel program. There are 124 villas in 21 buildings spread out over 15 acres, so it doesn't resemble a "condo project".

Point Pleasant does have a small beach (Sugar Beach) and we're adjacent to Margaritaville (opening soon) Pineapple Beach and Coki Beach (a short walk). There is snorkeling at Sugar Beach with many fish, turtles and other sea creatures. Plus there is a sunken airplane and boat to discover.

Point Pleasant has three swimming pools and beach chairs (and beach beds) are free to all guests.

Additionally, we have a Spa (Point Wellness), a restaurant (Panga), a sailing charter company and concierge (activities desk) to make your stay more comfortable. Our second restaurant is under renovation.

As a hotel guest, for transportation.....we have a free shuttle to transport guests around the resort, to other beaches, Red Hook, the Ferry Dock and Supermarket.

Our second restaurant is under renovation.

And to open when? It's been "under renovation" for months and months and months with repeated "coming soon" promises always broken. Given such a long wait I fully expect that, if it ever re-opens, the renovations will include specially imported and extremely rare Italian marble, and solid gold utensils individually hand-tooled by ancient craftsmen working by candlelight in remote foreign villages. This protracted saga has long since left the realm of the "island time" excuse! big grin

STT: LOL......has any project on-island been completed on time? Contractors that don't show up....hmmm.

Yes, we have a second restaurant! It just needs to be completed. I'll have more info on that by next weekend.

Anyway, there is an open restaurant at the resort (Panga). Food & drink is very good. Margaritaville will offer another restaurant choice (March?) with a boardwalk/path connecting Point Pleasant to Margaritaville.

Looks like Margaritaville will be completed long before PP's 2nd resturant. Is work even being done on it?

Sapphire has a much better beach than the tiny one at PP.

Alana:

Yes, Sapphire Beach is larger.

Sugar beach is about 90-100 feet wide. It's surrounded by boulders, it's very secluded and romantic. Plus we don't have cruise ship passengers. Our beach chairs, umbrellas and beach beds are free.

When Margaritaville opens in March we will have the expansive, crescent shaped, Pineapple Beach,

And if you want more action, Coki Beach and Coral World are just steps away.

Have they even started on the restaurant at Margaritaville???? Looks like they're only renovating the rooms/villas right now. Or will they wait until the rooms are mostly renovated before starting on the restaurant?

When Margaritaville opens in March ...

My understanding is that due to unforeseen circumstances in the construction phase, the soft opening has been rescheduled for some time in the summer.

I also understand that the renovation/construction of the restaurants are currently ongoing and the resort will open with all amenities in place.

Someone from the Margaritaville web site told me the grand opening is scheduled for May.

Life is a beach and I'm glad I've got mine.

Last I heard was just about a month ago and it was June. Who knows - soon come!

Now the question is (bets, anyone?) which will open first - Margaritaville of Blue Agave? Hmmmmm ....

Thanks for the replys. It appears that there are actually vacancies at Secret Harbour Villas. They just hadn't updated their web page to show vacancies out that far yet. So now we need to decide. Secret Harbor or Sapphire.
Anyone have any suggestions as to which would be better. We liked that Secret Harbour was quiet with no cruise ships. What does Sapphire Beach have to offer that Secret harbour does not?

I have stayed at secret harbour (2007) and sapphire (2014) and loved both. SH was a good bit more expensive but the condo was nicer, more updated. Sapphire was the best beach for snorkeling etc. and pool is closer to beach. There was a longer walk to the beach to access the water from our unit (bldg C I believe) at sapphire whereas just step off the patio at SH. You really can't go wrong either place, but if you book sapphire VRBO, just make sure that particular owner/unit has good reviews. Some owners are really outstanding and others just so-so (from what I gathered when I was researching). Oh, and as you know, SH has a really nice restaurant there. Sapphire does not. But they do have a snack bar that's cheaper for lunch and drinks than at SH. Hope this helps !

You'll love it! Here's a link to the Sapphire webcam to keep you going, and also look at the aerial footage linked top of page which was taken last year by a visitor with a drone camera:
