Starving Artists Day Spring Show

The St. Croix Landmarks Society (SCLS) is pleased to present the 21st Annual Starving Artists Day Spring Show with art, crafts, demonstrations and musical fun at Whim Museum in Frederiksted on Sunday, March 22, 2009 between 10:00am and 5:00pm. Tickets are sold at the door; admission fees are $5 per person, and children under 12 years old are free.

Starving Artists Day is one of the Landmarks Society’s most anticipated fundraising events of the year, showcasing over 70 Caribbean artists, jewelers, craftspeople and food vendors. Locals and visitors alike will find locally-made and original crafts, jewelry, fine art, ceramics, mahogany works, mocko jumbie sculptures, madras crafts, photography, fabrics, silks, plants, books, leather goods, candles, perfume oils, and lotions. Food and drink booths will feature local dishes such as fresh roast pig (lechon), patés, johnny cakes, fritters and fried fish in addition to treats and drinks like cakes, tarts, benye, breads, fraco, smoothies, liquors and juices. SCLS’s cash bar will be available all day.

Whim MuseumA special entertainment to this season’s event is a performance by Jamesie and The Allstars. SCLS also welcomes a number of local crafters and artisans who will demonstrate their talents. There will be additional performances by St. Croix’s young and talented musicians and dancers.

12pm – Glass blowing with Matt Fensky, Fire Island Glass
1pm - Clay animal sculture with Mandy Thody
1:30pm – Johnnycake making in the cookhouse with Gavina Villafane
2pm – Ointment & Salve making with Vanya Neptune, Lioness Creations
3pm – Pottery wheel throwing with Sara Hayes
4pm – Jewelry making with Fran Gomez, Designs & Details

And in The Whim Greathouse at 12:30pm there will be Ay Ay Baroque Consort featuring Elizabeth Robb and Laurance Schneider.

There will be kid’s games and activities throughout the Day.

The SCLS Starving Artists Day is a great way to spend a Sunday with the family. Other unique opportunities throughout the day include open house of the SCLS Research Library & Archives from 10:00am to 4:00pm, tours of the Whim Greathouse, self-guided tours of the Whim Grounds, shopping in the Museum Gift Shop and a special cash raffle.

The mission of the St. Croix Landmarks Society is to advance understanding and appreciation of the unique historical and cultural legacy of St. Croix through preservation, research and education. The four areas of concentration are: Whim and Lawaetz Museums, Research Library & Archives, Educational Outreach, and Island Preservation.
