Have you been trying to think of a fun Valentine to give your sweetie? Here’s an island themed Valentine idea to help get the ideas flowing.
Valentine in a Bottle
- Empty wine or champagne bottle… or more islandy… an empty rum bottle!
- A sheet of white paper
- Tea Bag/Water
- A Pen to write your beautiful note
- Small piece of thread
Clean the empty bottle. To get labels off soak the bottle in warm soapy water for an hour, then scrape them off. Set bottle aside to dry inside and out. Next you are going to age the paper; it’s easier than you might think. Make yourself some tea. Take the tea bag, squeeze out the excess water just a little, and smear it back and forth across the paper – which should be laying on a flat surface. The tea will give the paper an aged yellow look. If the tea bag gets dry dip it in a little water. Let the paper dry on the flat surface or use a hair dryer to dry it. Once dry you can write your message. You can write your message first and then age the paper but you should do a test first to make sure the ink doesn’t run when you pass the wet tea bag over the writing. Once finished with the note roll it up so it is narrow enough to fit into and slide out of the bottle. Use the thread to tie it. If you roll it up and just drop it into the bottle it will unroll and your sweetie won’t be able to get it out of the bottle easily.
Additional touches to this idea…
Island Themed Paper: If you have island themed scrapbook paper you could use that instead of the aged paper. Scrapbook paper is available in craft stores and craft sections of large grocery, convenience and office stores.
Island Decorations: Small wooden figures of palm trees or the sun can add a nice island touch to your bottle. Glass figures would work well too. This works great if you didn’t have an empty bottle, you can decorate a nice bottle of wine and make it part of the Valentine; place your note next to it. Wooden and glass figures are available in craft stores.
More Ideas: Fix the Valentine in a Bottle on a table with some fake sand and a small plastic palm tree. Or really romantic, get your island groove music playing, draw up a nice bath, put your Valentine in a Bottle (with the cork in it of course) in the bath. Or you can go all out, your islandy Valentine in a Bottle PLUS tickets for a vacation… to the U.S. Virgin Islands! 🙂
Happy Valentine’s Day!
